I will be taking my cbt and then the direct access course, next month
    (hopefully!).
i am a novice on the motorcycle front. my query is just...what sort of
bikes should i be looking for when i pass? i just really want something
for the weekend, to go to work occassionaly (only 4 miles away) and
when i get more confident longer runs (100+ miles)

its difficult as the average person will be able to tell you something
about cars..but for bikes its a completely different story. i
preferably want a bike which i can pratice with, but can use in the
longer run, dont really want to buy a bike and then replace it after a
    year.
    any help would be great....
my budget is about £1500 (but i will push it up if needs be)
also is a 600cc bike too out of my range?
    any recommendations would be great.

    Thank you

Something for the weekend? A Durex Suzuki, obviously.

Something small and disposable. Don't get anything with a fairing.

    £1500 will get you a reasonable 500cc bike (e.g. Honda CB500, Suzuki
GPZ500), but 600s at that price are likely to be a bit the worse for wear,
especially if you get into sportsbike territory. You'll probably need to
spend at least 200-300 of that budget on clothing anyway: £60 for a helmet,
£30 for gloves, £80 for a jacket as an absolute minimum, although I'd
    recommend some leather / cordura trousers - £80 minimum - and boots - £50
minimum, especially if you intend on riding through the winter. Probably
double all those costs if you want decent kit. Oh, and at least £500 for
insurance in your first year - and that's on a shitty old bike.

Thanks for the advice, 1500 is just for the bike (i'm expecting "other
costs" to come to about a 1k insurance..clothing..)
the suzuki looks quite attractive compared to the honda imo, but out of
curiousity, is the yamaha zxr6 too out of reach for a novice (ive seen
them for about 1500 for a 98 model...or should i generally be looking
    for something a lot newer?)

    Thanks once again

i think my vain-ness was coming out..but then again sports bikes are
    always going to look good!
besides the suzuki GPZ500 or the honda cr500 any other bikes i should
    shortlist?
googling doesnt really help from a novices point of view!!

unfortunately i cant afford a brand new bike, but how old max should it
    be?
    thank you.

it had been a VERY long day
have decided the on the cb500! now to get my license...
    just one last query.
i know i have to take the cbt, and the pratical bike test...
but what about the theory test? (i have a car license, so i passed the
car theory and hazard about 3 years ago)..are the theory tests
    different?!

thank you for all your help and opinions!

    A what ? zx6r ? or fzs600 ?

As burnt said, nothing with a full fairing ideally, so a fazer or
bandit might make a decent post DAS bike, if you take it easy.
