The trip to Guadalajara is still in the planning.. The date isn't locked
in yet and will depend on the time off that can be arranged by the
ones who want to make the run..

Meantime, the law requiring a passport to re-enter the U.S., goes
into effect on the 23 of Jan, 2007.. I have never had a passport
before and applied for it, this week.. Pretty easy stuff, actually..
We went to the Post Office in Irving and sure enough, they've
got a small office set aside there for people to apply for pass-
ports. It took a few minutes to fill out the application, take the photo
and pay the appropriate fees.. just a tad over one hundred dollars..

The nice lady offered to expedite the process from weeks to just
days, for a small additional fee, but I passed.. If an emergency
should require a trip sooner than expected, I can always call the
toll free number to expedite the processing.

Anyone who is interested in making this great ride with us, in
March or April.. might want to stop by their local post office to
get that passport.. I'd sure hate to leave someone in Mexico
when we try to come back home... Regards

That's nice. Was it an ''under the table'' fee? In pasos? (just kiddin'
    ya')

hehehe.. Nah.. been lookin' for that crew, every time I go down
there.. Haven't found them, yet.. You don't suppose someone's
been lyin' about that horde of mexicans invading the U.S., do you ?

On another note, the thought has occurred to me that quite a few
people are down there in Mexico, on six months visas.. The went
down there in Oct. and Nov. using their birth certificates as proof
of U.S. citizenship.. The new passport law is effective in Jan. and
there will be some of those folks unaware of it.. (dumber than rocks)
Surprise .. Surprise.. when they come back to the border, they'll
discover they can't come back home because they don't have a
passport.. Just think.. in some of those cases, the dodo's will have
spent all their money in Mexico and are going to have to spend some
more time in Mexico while they try to arrange for a passport through
the American Consulate.. That should make things interesting..

I renewed mine last year. Might be looking at an offshore job this
summer, so I figured I'd be ready. I got the expeditied service, only
    took a week.

Getting in and out of Mexico is a added benefit.

I'm curious about how the day to day foot traffic at busy border crossings
like San Ysidro, Ca., El Paso and Laredo will handle the passport exam-
ination.. There are thousands of people who make those daily crossings
to go to and from work.. That's a lot of passports to check..

At least for a time, there will be chaos at those crossings in particular..

This should really get interesting.. Regards

Well, according to the Department of Homeland Security, the passport
requirement only applies to people entering the US by air. The
requirement for land travellers hasn't been finalized, but won't take
    effect before 1-1-2008:

Not for another year, if then. These regulations are written by someone
who has no idea how the border works.

How many Texans have taken the rowboat across the river and lunch in
Boquillas when visiting Big Bend? Can't do it any more.

Lajitas had problems with workers no longer being allowed to go to work,
not to mention the golf hole that crosses the border.

It will continue to be a problem until we unite.

We'll have to wait for a year to find out. You would think these
employers on this side of the border would kick in the costs and the
hassles of getting those employees their passports. In the end, it
would be left up to the Mexican government to process all those
passports. If they go this next year without getting one, I'd have to
say they aren't that serious about wanting to cross.

I wasn't planning on getting mine except there might be an instance
where I will have to be on an airplane going in/out of either Canada or
Mexico this year. I know of at least 2 trips coming up in the next
couple months to Canada, and at least the same for Mexico.

    That's my thoughts on it.

The passport requirement for ground travel across the Canada/US border
initially scheduled to take effect this year has been delayed at least
until 2008. Talk is they are looking into some form of alternate ID,
something less onerous to obtain than a passport. Personally I have no
problem with the passport requirement, but from what I hear they are
    not too difficult to forge.

We'll see what the deep thinkers come up with.

Bill, man, I am impressed that you remembered the color of my
    Motorsikel.
Nah, it wasnt me, you saw, or they saw, because I would've been riding
    2up.
If I ever am in that area, you can be certain, Honey will be on the
