Any easy ways of persuading them that they don't really want me as a
Juror? Preferably without having to turn up at all?

    and I quote...

As a result of the 2003 Criminal Justice Act, every person on the
electoral roll, (who has lived in the UK for five years) is eligible for
jury service. The only exceptions are people deemed to have "mental
disorders", people over 70 years-old or people who have been
disqualified from jury service, such as those with criminal convictions.
This means you will be liable to attend jury service, regardless of your
    job or commitments.
Before the Act was passed, members of the armed forces, practising
doctors, nurses, midwives, dentists, vets and chemists could all be
excused from jury service, this is no longer the case. Although members
of the armed service may be excluded if their commanding officer can
certify that it would be, "prejudicial to the efficiency of the service
if that member were to be required to be absent from duty".

    End quote.

Sir may wish to ponder the fact that speeding is indeed a criminal
conviction, just not a recordable one.

Why not do it? The legal system won't work if nobody is prepared to do jury
duty. It is greatly weakened if the only people to sit on juries are those
who aren't clever or influential enough to find a way to avoid it. If you
expect to have the right to trial by jury for serious offences then you need
to consider how that right can be supported.

The only time I'd actively support my own trial by jury would be if I knew
I was guilty. If I hadn't done it, I'm fucked if I'd put my fate in the
    hands of the great unwashed.

No, you can claim for loss of earning but its not much, IIRC about 100
    quid/day max.
You don't really have much of a choice TBH.

You should do it - it's the 'mix' of people that makes the Jury system work.
However, if you really want to get out of it then turn up wearing a tee
shirt with a political slogan or some other mildly 'offensive to someone'
slogan. If you don't go to prison for contempt (which maybe you should
anyway!) you may just get out of it.

Alternatively plead with the Judge that your work/home life will suffer
dramatically. The new rules don't really give any scope for this but it's
in no-ones interest to have a jury member whose mind isn't on the task.
