So was this one - so having been caught rather easily he now gets done
for failing to stop at the scene of an injury accident!

My dad owned 2 Volvo 340s, a 1.4DL and a 1.7GL. Both were abused and
neglected for well over 150K miles each and were almost[1] perfectly
reliable over the 10 years he had them. He never bothers servicing cars,
he just runs them til they break then either scraps them or flogs them
for pennies. I sold the first to one of my ex's mums and she put a
further 70K miles on it before her son wrote it off for her. The second
one was sold to a cousin of mine and she's still got it 6 years later.
Approx 50K miles have been racked up in that time.

On one particularly bad icy winter's day my dad managed to spin the
second one 3 times and into a truck, off a car, through a ditch and into
a field. It was 3 years old at the time and we instantly thought they
would write it off when he told us what had happened. When I went to get
some personal stuff from it I was nicely surprised at how little damage
had been done. One front wing, both bumpers, tailgate and a sizeable
dent to a rear quarter were the only major items damaged. Dad got it
back a week later all repaired and you'd never have known it had been
    smashed. Tough cars.

Dad has a 1997 Toyota Corolla 1.6Si now he's retired, which has been
totally trouble free in 6 years, 60K miles and one service at 15K.

[1] On the 1.4 absolutely nothing apart from an ignition module[2] and
consumables was needed. The 1.7 was going the same way when it developed
a serious oil leak which was pinpointed to the pressure switch. I fitted
a pattern part and after a week that leaked, so I had it replaced under
warranty. Total cost 3.50 quid. That was all both cars ever needed in
the way of mechanical repairs over the time.
[2] Replaced under warranty as a goodwill measure even though the car
was just 3 weeks over 12 months old and hadn't been serviced. My dad had
to book it in for a service to get it done though.

    On a slightly different note:
When I was a kid some of my mates wanted to join the police force
specifically so that they could lob police cars around at high speed and
    stuff like that.
I wonder how many serving officers there are who harboured the same desires
only now have seen them become reality?

Can't say as I blame 'em though, most of us would quite like a stab at
thrashing through traffic with the wee-wahs blaring :)

I'd quite like to work for traffic [1], but the thought of doing two
years as plod really is a major turn off.

I also suspect the police may have 'issues' with me.

[1] Believe it or not, not just to swan around in squad cars or on bikes.

Yeah, it's hardly something to motivate one to join the rozzers is it now.
Oh I dunno, they seem to take just about anyone these days, at least they do
if the nice-but-mind-bogglingly-illiterate copper who took a witness
statement from me recently was anything to go by.
Well no of course not just swanning around in them, there's also the high
speed chases, playing with the stingers, flooring it through busy traffic
with the wee wahs blaring out, all that skid pan and other defensive /
aggressive driving training, and not having to wear a tit on your head :)

Dont start me on that - I cannot believe the atrocious standard of
spelling these days. It doesnt seem to just be coppers though - more
    like all the "yoof"!

Oh this copper was quite something. Still a young bloke, maybe 22 or 23yo I
    should imagine.

He came to my home to take a witness statement, I had been witness to
somebody causing criminal damage to somebody else's car you see[1].

In fairness he was decent, polite, and went to some trouble to ensure that
he thoroughly understood just what it was that I had seen and where I'd seen
    it from.
The real shocker came when we sat down to write up my statement. I shan't
complain about the state of his handwriting nor the trouble he had spelling
the words, that doesn't really make too much difference as long as the
appropriate words get written down correctly and other people can read them.
Nor shall I complain about him mumbling his way through some acronym or
other relating to all the elements he had to get right when taking a
statement; as I said he was still a young chap and this particular case most
certainly didn't require Inspector Frost IYSWIM.

However, his command of the (written) English language was dreadful, truly
dreadful. Admittedly I see no reason why a police officer should be capable
of prose with which to challenge the greatest pensmiths of our time, but I
would argue that a basic grasp of English grammar and sentence formation
must be a prerequisite to taking a written statement from a witness. In the
end I simply dictated the words and punctuation to him which was a slow
    process but it worked[2]

[1] Longish story, and no I couldn't have stopped it
[2] Isn't that how it's supposed to work anyway? I was a bit surprised when
he set about paraphrasing what I'd said, surely it should have been my
    statement and not his?

Yes - which would indicate an impact speed of at least 32mph (for a
