They weren't proper volvos though, built by DAF to their own design,
    IIRC.

You do, indeed, RC. DAF designed it, and it was built in DAF
factories, but DAF were owned by Volvo by the time it went
    into production.

Look, if you're not going format your posts properly the only person around
here who's going to take you at all seriously is Sir.Tony, and you don't
    want that.

Do everyone a favour - read the FAQ and post accordingly.

    Thanks.

Excellent - you`ve been playing with the sideways method of cornering
then? I would think that the weight of the gearbox on the rear axle
helps the back end step out.
No hurry - if you want to stick it in the post rather than travel then
    that would be fine.

Not on the 340 - its also got the interesting feature of the gearbox
being part of the rear axle.

I think with the 340 thats half of the problem - the weight over the
rear makes it snap away quite quickly and a bit of a bugger to get
    back

Um, yers, it does somewhat, if you like to play. If you want to get
home without any heroics, I suppose it tests your smoothness. No doubt
you have had a fairly interesting couple of days... never enough
idiots to go round... Been busy? :)
    - I hadn't even thought of that. I'll get a load of bubble-rap and
    wing it to you.

I think I'll stick with an empty boot. I'd rather like to keep it in
    its present condition...

My mistake, I didn't think about that one (but really it's a DAF). The
ballast thing was about the Amazon/140/240/740.

Its certainly been busy - including the chap who decided an overtake
in the snow on a blind bend was a good idea - unfortunately hit the
police volvo coming the other way and sent it into Frensham Ponds!
Completely submerged - apparently the water was a touch chilly!

Whatever suits you best - cheers mate

Bwaahaahaa! An outcome with no obvious losers - fuckwit gets a severe
nicking, with station steps possibly involved, and plod[1] gets an
    ice-water plunge. Nice.

[1] Err, it wasn't you, was it. Cos obviously that wouldn't be
    hilarious at all.

Yes it's a DAF, but when Volvo bought DAF they took the existing specs
before final production and brought Volvo tweaks and quality control
to them, making what was a damn fine car for the money. Not pretty,
    mind, but practical.
When I lived in Sweden in 1982/3, I had an old Volvo 140 estate that
had been a hearse. I drove it through a Swedish winter without snow
tyres and had no problems with the handling, even on untreated country
roads packed with snow and ice. No ballast needed.

  16. And probably not driven by the same policeperson (couldn't see if
M/F) driving the Police Fiesta in front of me yesterday on the A287
    into Farnham from the south..

YOU ARE ALLOWED TO GO MORE THAN 20MPH!

If you hadn't been driving a police car you would
have had the embarrasment of being passed at high speed
    by a Grand Voyager.

I thought they trained policebeings to drive properly?

Never a great success here but judging by the numbers I saw some 10
years ago in London it must have been quite popular (for a Volvo, that is).
No, definitely not needed, it was just a trick that was fairly wide spread.
I had an Amazon (technically very similar to the 140) for some years and
    never used ballast.

In a Fiesta he would just be a bog standard divisional driver. You
take 100 members of the public and a proportion of them will always be
shit drivers no matter how much training you give them You take 100
members of the public, train them to be police officers and then give
them driver training and a proportion of them will still always be
    shit drivers!
Anyway - if it was a Fiesta then it wasnt a local car - Surrey havent
    got any!
