  3. The Lifetime Achievement Award should have rung some alarm bells.
Normally given just in time - and he was only sixty, ffs. I'm more used
to seeing awards like that given to crusty old gimmers who I expect to
drop off the twig as a matter of course, sometime soon.

I've never spent money to see 'em either.

They were good every time, with and without Gabriel.

Says the man who spent dosh on the back catalogue of the Mahavishnu
Orchestra ;-) Like I said "similar (ish)" I have vague recollections
of a prog rock thread on here which suggested to me at the time you
were into similar stuff that I listened to when I was, err...,
    somewhat younger.

    Nothing more than that.

No, I wasn't trying to imply that he was prog. Though some of his more
successful albums were of that era. I was just rather surprised that
you hadn't seemed to have heard of him. What with you obviously being
a bit of an old giffer.

And, FWIW, I agree with your "if you liked that, you might like this"
    doesn't always work observation.

He certainly didn't age well. He was a pretty good looking bloke (so I'm
told) and in what looked like pretty good shape when he was in his 20's, so
the following 30 odd years must've been fucking hard and yet I've always
thought it easy to get booze and smack in Scotchland.

He looks a lot like Scraggy now (well until yesterday he did), aklthough to
be fair, Scraggy is 20 years older than JM. Still.. Scraggy.... get to the
    doc's for a check-up.

  14. Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Champ
I have to say this was a little surprising to me too.

I have (fairly obviously) been re-listening to a fair bit of his output
over the last couple of days,

Might I commend "Head and Heart" to you? I'd be interested to hear the
technical opinion of a proper guitarist[1] on it.

[1] Go on, have that one on me.

Champ will not like the acoustic arrangement

IMV it was okay. I prefer the style of Richard Thompson though.

Hmmm... I prefer the slightly "cleaner" sound from "Sweet Little
    Mysteries".
It's still acoustic, but I fear you are right. That boy has no soul (but
    plenty of soles).
Odd cove, preference. I do like RT, thobut.

See, I have a problem with his voice.

I have a *lovely* version of "Shenandoah" by him somewhere. It just
*fits* that song. But generally, I find it intrusive.

As I said: odd cove, preference.

    Oh, there. Ta, Wessie

    <listens>

I'm not sure of what the view of a 'proper guitarist' [1] is meant to
add. Sure, he can play the guitar, and pretty well - the outro is
probably technically fairly demanding. But that was never the
    question, was it?
It's not really the arrangement. It mostly that it's just a gentle
folky sort of song, and that's not really my bag. I'm not really a
sophisticate when it comes to music - white boys making a noise with
electric guitars is mostly my bag.

[1] for which, many thanks :)

It was the outro that I was interested to hear about.
    Heh. Nothing wring with that.
