Byers did appear to be a ****, but what's wrong with having a non-driver
    in
Well, cars are the most used form of transport in the UK. Someone who
doesn't drive maybe wouldn't understand why they are so popular. Not
because of enjoying driving or similar, but knowing the freedom that having
your own transport to go wherever you want, whenever you want brings.

Also, they would have no personal interest or stake in that particular area.
You never really hear ex-brits who have move to, say, the US, complaining
about UK taxes, do you. It's the same reason I should not be put in charge
of London Underground, because no matter how much I understand it or might
be good as running an underground system, I will not be using it 'cos I live
    miles away.

the point is, if you disagree with something being said on a radio
phone-in, then it makes a ****-sight more sense to object to what's
being said by phoning than posting about it on here.

Over the past 10 years I can't think of more than a handful of work
related journeys I could have done using trains and public transport. I
used to always use the train when working in central London, but once
you're 5 or 10 miles out from the centre it's not really an option and
that's the thing about customers, they're not all in the same place..

Without a car a visit to a customer site would be something like.

Taxi or 2 Busses to Station
Catch Train (Midland Mainline) direct to London, Birmingham, Leeds,
etc.. But no direct connections to lots of other locations.

...So assume 1 or 2 train changes for a journey.

Then a taxi to the destination.

Add that lot up and it's generally cheaper and faster to go by car.

To back that up here's an example of a more regular Home -> Warwick
commute, which is hardly an exceptional journey and one I do twice a
    week by car..

Car: Leave home around 8AM, drive 57 miles, arrive by 9:15 allowing for
    traffic.

Train: Leave 7AM, Taxi to Station,
Catch Derby to Birmingham New Street Train
Walk From Birmingham New Street -> Birmingham Snow Hill
Catch Birmingham Snow Hill -> Warwick Train.
    Taxi to Office.
    ....Arrive before 10, maybe.

Without a car a visit to a customer site would be something like.
Plus you and your firm won't be considered a bit 'wierd' for arriving in a
taxi or, worse, walking to your customers offices.

I guarantee if you even mentioned to them that you were coming by train,
taxi or walking, to be more environmentally friendly or similar they would
instantly have you marked down as an outfit of sandal wearing, vegetarian,
do-gooding hippies. Strangely, that doesn't seem the case if either the
distance invloved is big (eg. Brum to Dundee) or you are going to London.

Also, what about carrying stuff? Not to mention what your boss might let
you do - many firms will insist you go in your shiny company car, even if
    logic dictates otherwise.

What, apart from all the energy used making the car? Plus it means you
maybe won't have one at all, so would presumably walk or use ither
    public transport if available...
