Actually, they're trying to get the "personal mobility" genie back in the
bottle. People are much easier to govern if they can't travel faster than
4mph and all their communications are monitored.

  4. I recall way back in the dim mists of time when 10M was a lot for a
computer hard drive and came in a filing cabinet sized box, I was
working for a company run by trade savvy accountants selling bespoke kit
into the car trade. I got a lot of lectures about how the economy and
society has/is/will be moulded around the benefits of
building/selling/maintaining the motor car and the whole infrastructure
    thing that goes with it.

They weren't far wrong as it turns out. Except for their total ignorance
of the meaning of the word sustainability of course, they got that bit
    wrong.

Like living in a science fiction film innit?

By looking it up on the internet, of course.

But I told you not to ask.

And that's pretty much the size of it.

Apart from the fact that the offence relating to killing someone is
'causing death by dangerous driving' (there's no equivalent yet for
careless driving) and the answer is pretty much in the question, Des
seems to be overlooking the basic rule that the guilt is determined by
what you did, and the sentence is determined by what the outcome was.

Thus, if you drive like a total wanker and damage a bit of armco, you'll
be sentenced more leniently than if you drive like a total wanker and
damage a bus shelter full of nuns, despite the basic offence (and
    charge) being the same.

So you can't be nailed for 'potentially having caused something' if that
something wasn't caused. Which sounds fine to me.

so if i'm a ped on a zebra crossing and someone (deliberately or otherwise)
doesn't stop, then as far as you are concerned:

    - if they hit me, they deserve to be prosecuted
    - if i heroically leap out of the way and escape injury, they do not deserve
    to be prosecuted

    - If they hit you, they deserve to be prosecuted for whatever offence
covers jumping a zebra crossing while it's in use and, if found guilty,
will be sentenced based on the outcome

    - If you heroically leap out of the way they deserve to be prosecuted
for whatever offence covers jumping a zebra crossing while it's in use
and, if found guilty, will be sentenced based on the outcome

Need me to explain that a third time?

the "whatever offence" is infraction of the zebra, pelican and puffin
pedestrian crossings regulations 1997 section 25 fwiw

I understand what you're trying to say, but it doesn't and won't happen and
    it's stupidity to think otherwise.

  17. What about if you drive like a total wanker and damage a container full
of giraffes? And would it make any difference if the container was ok
but the giraffes were all broken?
