I was planning to pull the Jag engine and gearbox week after next to
discover the cause of the very strange knocking [1]. Wasn't exactly
looking forward to outdoor heavy car repairs in November.

First I thought I'd go and have a chat with the under the arches chap who
had done the original swap (I fitted up the engine and got it running, he
    just swapped the blocks over).

Anyway, much scratching of heads from the other car repair "arches"
including the next door motorcycle place who had all come round to see
the sport - he disappears under the car and the knocking stops.

Turns out the engine had slipped during fitting and the pressed steel
sump had taken the weight - a minor adjustment with a pry bar fixed it.

He managed to look both sheepish and pleased with himself.

Now, who wants to buy a Volvo 850...

  2. What was banging? Were the conrods hitting the inside of the sump, of
was the sump vibrating against the car?

I think it was more the plate between the flywheel and sump.

    I feel your pain.
    Result!

After my grovelling under SWMBO's punto the other day which included
liberally spraying the lower gearbox tie bar mounting bolts with GT85
SWMBO now reports the clank on starting and stopping has gone. Ha, I've
ordered a a new tie bar. I still think the old one has a fubar 'big end'
rubber bush but can't be sure until I see the new one in the flesh as it
were. I suspect the lubrication has just softened the blow IYSWIM and is
only a temporary remission. I'll find out tomorrow.

It probably wasn't dented, just resting on summat it shouldn't be.

The cross member is at the front of the sump (it's the front suspension
sub-frame) and the sump wasn't in contact with that.
