Isn't that a bit different (not better) to following the party line at
    all times?

But what about the inner London MPs who don't get it...? If it's to be
regarded as an integral part of the salary, not as a recompense for
expenses directly incurred, then should they regarded as only being worth
    3/4 of an MP?
Well, no, they're not. At least - they're not the rules that the rest of
us have to play within. And that's what grates.
I very much doubt HMC&R would let me get away with a deal like that.

Supporting local NIMBYs. Supporting local obsolete industries.
Supporting local campaigns against appropriate national policies.

Ah, but whose decision is it?

It _should_ be the will of the constituency, since the MP is there as
their representative voice. Isn't that the same as caring for the
    constituents?

well, I don't normally attend this meeting (one of my deputies does)
and me attending meant they had to switch to English for most of it.
So I thought it was only polite to have a go at recprocating a little
(only in the niceties after the real meeting was finished).
Unfortunately my French is very basic.
Apparently my accent is very good, but I just talk totally
    ungrammatical crap mostly.

I suppose a good MP should be able to accurately gauge the feelings of
the constituency (from his surgeries etc) - so the local NIMBYs might be
in the minority and therefore can be shot^W ignored...

In the old days the main job of the MP seemed to be getting subsidies for
the local miners/farmers/futtock-wranglers. Now, of course, that can
best be dealt with by your MEP who can get far bigger grants...

They don't get the housing allowance, they still get other allowances
    though.
    So - it's all sour grapes? They've got it why can't I? I'd have
    expected better from you.

Fair comment, but I see from the voting record of Dr Richard Taylor that
he generally votes the way I would want to on the major issues.

I suspect Martin Bell might do the same if he got the chance again. Not
    so sure about Esther.

Perhaps there will be a huge swing to 'Spoilt Paper' tomorrow:

No. See my reply to Simes.

As it happens I vote for the MP standing for the Party which I wish to
see have a majority in Parliament. I DGAF how well or badly that MP
    cares for the constuency.

    Is that wise?

Shirley you'd try and pick someone that did both - but are you saying
you'd pick someone who would put party above the needs of the
    constituency?

An extreme example would be the forcible moving of everyone out of the
constituency (apart from 1 voter) as the party wants it's very own rotten
    borough.

Most certainly, unless, as you say, there was someone who did both.

The Tories want us out of Europe and will attempt to repeal the human
rights act. Wild horses wouldn't drag me to vote Tory. Labour want 42
day detention without trial, ID cards and anything else that'll
fulfill their dream of a totalitarian state. Wild horses wouldn't drag
me to vote Labour. So I'll vote LibDem, in the hope that some good may
come of it. It's either that or spoil my vote.

That decision is unaffected by which candidates the Parties put up.
    That's a risk I'm prepared to take.
