Why do you need to waste hundreds of millions of £££ on FGD if you've
binned all the coal fired plants? It's only coal fired stations that
need FGD and nuclear stations are crap until someone decides which
part of Scotland we're dumping all the waste in.

Is France part of Scotland? Or what about Israel - that's part of
    Scotland, yes?

As far as this is concerned anywhere outside Bedfordshire is part of
    Scotland.

Does it matter? the extra radiation may increase the locals chances of

I said conventional coal plants. Build new ones or adapt old ones. Loads of
low grade coal around to be so used up.

Obviously creating current employment for a future MP such as yourself is an
    important factor in my calculations.

As for nuclear waste there are two mined salt domes in the western world
already big enough to take all the high and low active waste in existence
and for the next 1000 years.

    Heh....

A few years ago a mate of mine swapped to a meter - to save money. The
bill came in and it was higher than his previous water rates bill, so he
put bricks in the toiler cisterns so that a flush lasted about 2 seconds,
made sure he and his wife had short showers (he fitted an alarm to the
shower that made a hell of a row after 2.5 minutes), disconnected the
dishwasher, bought a new washing machine that was more efficient etc
    etc...

The bills kept coming in and were 5 or 6 times what he was paying under
the rates system. So after the one year trial (at that time) he
exercised his right to have the meter removed.

A couple of years later he had an extension built on the back of his
house, and in the process of putting in the footings they cut through a
water pipe. Our hero turns of his water at the stop-cock out the front
and they seal up the pipe (as he's got no tap in the garage or anywhere
else out the back, then turns the water back on.

All is good - until that evening he gets an annoyed knock at the front
door. It was a neighbour. Behind my mate's house - in what was once the
paddock behind his house is a small housing estate, built in the early
80's. All 14 houses have no water....

Turns out he was paying for metered water for all those houses... How he
laughed when he worked it out...

It seems I'd both misremembered and also assumed my water bills were
quarterly, and the last one was about £80. which was for 6 months. So
    about the same.

The best bit is I seem to pay more for drainage than I use in water.

We always get packs of Ogeu (from the Pyrenees) when we are at the
    chateau.

Name or Place of Source: Pyrénées atlantiques

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) 268 mg/l
    Calcium (Ca++) 48 mg/l
    Magnesium (Mg++) 11 mg/l
    Sodium (Na+) 31 mg/l
    Potassium (K+) 1 mg/l
    Bicarbonate (HCO3-) 183 mg/l
    Chloride (Cl-) 44 mg/l
    Sulphate (SO4--) 16 mg/l
    Nitrate (NO3-) 4 mg/l

Very refreshing, and much cheaper than the big names[1]. The mains water
is not very pleasant and I prefer the fizzy distinct taste of Ogeu to
adding a fruit cordial or similar to tap water.

[1] In fact it is often found in Super U as an 'own brand'. Wish I could
    get it in the UK.
