If it had been, at least they'd have paid tax on the extra.
Don't forget, Simes, when there was all the furore about Fred
Goodwin's pension, La Harman (deputy leader, etc.) was moved to say
"it might be legal, but does it stand up in the court of public
    opinion?" or similar.

    Sauce, goose, gander, etc.

Once you've got the move out of the way come round and you can have a
look at my 400D and lenses, it'll give you a good feel for what the
    Canon stuff is like.

The lenses you buy are the real concern, rather than the camera body.
IMHO that's one of Canon's strengths as there's a good selection of
not super expensive USM lenses, which are the fast focussing ones.

So what do we think of Alan Johnson then[1] - better, worse or more of
    the same?

[1] Who used to stack shelves & Tesco, so probably hasn't got the
    skills for the job.

Got one of those for my D40. Wicked bit of kit.

That's a pretty patronising view. What about those who drop out of the
educational system but are happy to just get on and graft? What makes
you think they need an "apprenticeship"?

I'll get one in time for TT2010.

Yeaah I'd disagree on the apprenticeship, at 18 I walked straight into
a decent paid IT job doing the same work as my 35 year old colleague.
A couple of years later I was working for an IT services company,
running projects on my own and getting charged out at extortionate
rates, in the process getting myself a nice bonus - I doubt either of
these things would have been possible were I simply an apprentice.

I don't think that undermines the national service concept though, as
that's the same deal for everyone. Look at how it works in the
    Scandanavian countries, and Switzerland.

It's dead handy for getting close shots of stuff where you can't get
near the action. I've found it useful for taking shots at stock car
races where I'm on the opposite side of the oval.

I am, of course, a Nikon kid. The Ixus purchase is an aberration.

That's the sort of thing I want on for.

    One of these two:

    http://www.jessops.com/online.store...non/EF 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM-30795/Show.html

I'll have to do some financial wrestling to try and justify the extra
£200 quid for the IS one though.
I'm in the Canon club. Not that it really matters that much.

More of the same, I suspect. And he'll probably be the leader of the
    party within 6 weeks.
    heh.

Just a formalisation of on the job training, but to ensure people
actually get trained and get an opportunity to "get on and graft"
rather than just making the tea.

That's a bit pricey. I paid 307 quid delivered for my Nikon 70-300 with
VR (IS in Canon-speak). The vertical stabilisation works a treat for
horizontal motion shots. Just a shame I'm a cack-handed monkey.

I've never had a job that involved just making the tea. I think you're
    generalising quite heavily here.

    crap.

    case one:

I left uni early, and got a job as a night security guard for three
months. Then I worked on a 3 month time-and-motion study in the same
factory I'd been a security guard. Then I got a job doing "general IT"
stuff in a double-glazing factory. Then I became a "junior
programmer". At no point was I required to "just make the tea".

    case two:

My eldest left school with poor-ish A-levels (a couple of passes).
After about 2 months of looking he got a job as an administrative
assistant with an IT training company. He left that after 10 months
and now works in admin/reception/general assistant in a council-run
drop-in centre for disadvantaged people, which he really likes doing,
and it pays pretty well for someone his age. He doesn't make the tea
    either.

    Apprenticeships are for Northerners, clearly.

Oh, I'm sure they can be bought for cheaper, Jessops isn't the most
competitive around. It was just a quick link to post.

Yebbut, you work for IBM, so it's not expected that you actually know
how to do anything hands-on yourself anyway.
