J&S refund policy

SWMBO bought an IXS textile jacket last week, but then decided she
didn't want it after all. It's brand new, hasn't been out of the bag.
When she took it back today, she was told they "don't do refunds", and
was fobbed off with a credit note.

I thought it was law that retailers have to take refunds for unwanted
goods in new condition, in reasonable time, and failing that, they have
to display their refund policy clearly. Does she have a leg to stand
on, or are J&S in the right?

Either way, they could have been a bit nicer about it, and I'm tempted
to not go there again, given that other retailers aren't such cunts.

    AIUI, they are right.
You can only get a cash refund if the goods are either faulty, or
    mis-described/mis-sold.
As it is, it is your own fault for buying it and then not wanting it,
    not J&S for mis-selling.
Many retailers will give a cash refund in such conditions, but it is not
a legal requirement, just their interpretation of good customer service.

Hairy muff. She can put the credit note towards some boots, I suppose.

Sure, and that interpretation is so common these days, that I suppose
one almost expects it. I'll look out for it in the future, and make
sure to frequent retailers that implement that policy.

J&S in Birmingham have a sign on the checkout saying all returns as
subject to a 10% restocking fee. I thought that was against the
    'rules' as well.

I may find out next week as I may have something to return.

I'm not an expert but I think they've actually gone further than they
need to so you either use the credit note or try to find someone to
buy it off you at face value.
You'll have to let us know which dealers these are because most will
do the same as J&S or less.

He/She who shouts loudest and all that.
I believe that's the case, but ICBW. A music shop tried the "We don't do
refunds" on me after I spent a few quid on something that didn't "do it" for
me after I'd got it home. There was nothing wrong with the item, but I was
never going to use it so I took it back. After one or two minutes of
"banter", I said I'd just nip outside and call their head office because the
shop didn't have any signage giving information about refunding. I got my
money back along with a massive discount on the item I DID buy. They'd blown
    it by then though.
Oddly, I won't go back to that music shop again.

I've found the Cheshire shop superb from a customer service POV. I bought a
jacket for the wife and the C.E. armour was too restrictive, so the lass who
worked there spent a good solid half hour sweating like Mike Jackson on a
rape charge getting the original armour out and a set of Knox armour in.
Middle of summer it was and FUCKING hot in the shop.

SO is clearly faulty. Perhaps that's where you should be looking for a
    refund.

    know. Thanks.

J&S in Birmingham had a blanket 10% off all parts and accessories on
    Saturday.

Dunno if that was just the weekend though.

just goes to show what difference the people on the ground make to a
chain. HG at Gants Hill is fucking shit, the staff couldn't be fucking
arsed giving you the time of day, never mind doing a decent job of
    trying to sell stuff.

What a ****. The first thing you do when sizing up is consider a back
protector, and then sell them up into the right one for them on safety
    grounds.
