  1. I recall seeing that (or it may have been another one, but I doubt the
existence of more than one of them) parked on the Prom in Douglas about
25 years ago. Very nice it was too, but the rear wheel was driven
through a Burman box, which was asking for trouble.

I dunno - the heavy duty box by Burman was a pretty robust affair, more
robust than some of the Lard Roller ones, I have to say.

I unforget rolling to an unpowered stop in our dairy's brand new (at the
time) SIIA LWB, having delivered a lot of milk to the Spaniards in
    Stornoway Harbour. [1]

[1] Fortunately for them they were safely inside their trawlers, not
    afloat individually.

The mainshaft (I think it was) had neatly sheared, and I have to say in
my defence that this became a well-known fault, and I wasn't gunning it.

I don't think it was the V8 engine, but I wouldn't expect you to be able
to give one of those full-chat in a 'bike anyway, so the box was
    probably adequate.

Either, seriously the E is no where near Enduro spec.

Not anymore, for sure. The EXC was always the best out the crate, but
the DRZ-E wasn't bad amongst the also-rans when it came out. It's been
well & truly left behind by the latest crop though.

As for the difference between trail bikes & enduro bikes, it depends on
what you consider to be trail bikes. The days of a large range of bikes
made specifically for trail riding are long gone. The *vast* majority
of people these days use EXCs, ECs, WRFs etc i.e. pukka enduro bikes.
Therefore I consider trail bikes to be bikes that people use for trail
riding - which means there is no real difference.

  8. It certainly got him there and back, I presume. It's just that the box
seemed such a weedy little thing in comparison.

First on the road legal bike at 16 that was for me, '48 Squariel 4G.

Those were the days, hardly any traffic, no helmet, go as fast as you
wanted, it's a piss take today.

Two simple questions for you "Krusty":

    1) Have you ever taken part in competitive motorcycle sport, and if so
    what branch and how often?

    2) Do you support the use of fully fledged enduro race bikes, piloted
by complete twats in full armour, as trail bikes, specifically bearing
in mind that the antics of these prats does a lot to support those
wanting to close access to trails?

You haven't still got that 990cc SV have you?

I wouldn't mind one of those now. ;-)

I had to get rid of it because Brentwood Council objected to it being
parked in their car park all the time.

    <smaller voice still>

So it was broken for spares.

    </voice>

And how I always regretted it.

    If you only knew then......

Mine was the X variety, same thing, different badge. Last thing I sold and
regretted it ever since was an Ariel HT5 when I was skint a week before
Christmas but it went to a bloke who had been trying to prise us apart for
    more then three years :-(

I always thought the magdynos were differently positioned, but on
checking, I see they were behind the pots on both models.
BT,DT,GTTS, but not with that model. (1929 B29 2¾ hp Douglas)

Now I'm going to go into a corner and grow a hump...

I had quite a few Douglases around 1960, mainly Mk3, 4,5 and sports models
of these and one of each 80 and 90+, got well fed up with them twisting
crankshafts when overrevved by missing gears with the not so positive change
gearboxes but you wouldn't thrash them as much nowadays, parts were cheap
then. Sold seven bikes (three still running) for £7 to a mate who then got
married and buried them in his mother's garden when he left home, it's what
you did in those days. Last one I ran was Mk 4 I think, NRB923, but I don't
think anyone will have dug it up, it'll not be a survivor. Knocked a r/hand
pot off that one once on a cat's eye and rode it home like that by which
time the conrod was hitting the magneto at the top and worn halfway through
    the cam at the bottom!

By the way the Ariel was 1957 trials model. Not with you on the BT,DT,GTTS
    what are these?
