What motorcycle events have you actually taken part in Krusty? You dont
seem to have much of a clue, so it would be surprising if you have done
    any at all.

What was the Garden Gate model then? Really tall cylinder with long
slightly converging pushrod tubes, I think. (Someone stole my Irwin
    Fagash book - sob!)

Got dark all of a sudden, and it's snowing. Horrid granular stuff, like
    a poor imitation of hail.

'Garden Gate' refers to the frame. I think it was used for all of the
frames with plunger rear suspension, as opposed to 'Featherbed' which
was Norton's swinging-arm frame. The 16H was supplied in the plunger
frame as was the ES2, and the 500cc Model 7 twin which, I think, was
the first use of the 'Dominator' name. But I could well be wrong! I'll
    check over the weekend.

16H was definitely side-valve and Garden Gate is definitely the frame.
The post war ohv singles (Model 50, Model 18, Model 19, ES2, 500T) all
had the sloping pushrod tubes you remember.

Rapide 45HP, Black Shadow 55HP in standard tune, Black Lightning
up to 100+ depending on fuel, though apparently cooling became
distinctly dodgy at maximum tune. The main limit on the Vincent
was the big end, max sustained revs were 5,500 with the original
crowded roller big end, which is why serious tuners went as far a
to make their own caged roller bearings. Alpha Bearings was set
    up after Vincent folded.

Compression ratios were higher on the Shadow. Besides that
sounds like a story I have heard about Douglas. The 80+ and 90+
had the same engine and what was produced on the brake decided
    what they were sold as.

Just looking at a photo of a 16H it is a side valve. You may be
confusing it with the Model 19, a 600cc OHV slogger.

So it doesn't blow itself up if you fall off. Saves money on race engines.

And more engine braking saves on brake fade, it's what you get used to.;-)

There was a HarBSA at Cassington last year.

    Begs the question, why?

See <http://www.andyclews.plus.com/norvin.jpg> for a pic (taken in 1976) of
a Norvin that was near where I lived. Scanned from a 30-yr-old print so
not the best quality. It was a mean-looking lump. I wonder if it's still
    around.

  15. I gather that if you have about 15 grand to spare you can buy a complete
brand new (not NOS) 1000 twin engine from the owners' club.

Last I heard, you had to find the crankcases, but that *WAS* when Harper
    Engineering were the successors.

Perhaps someone's found a crankcase mine.

Or a supply of the drone engines.

    *Possibly* Portland Road.
