    A cb500 engine would have started out with one. It would t5ake more
    effort to get rid of it (assuming standard carbs) than it would to
    just leave it. If it ain't broke, etc...

    You know, you old gimmer, you have an infuriating habit of referring
    obliquely to what sound like *excellent* escapades from way back when
    and not giving us any details.

    I mean, come on, tell us more! For a start, what on earth was the Met
    doing with Daimler Darts anyway?

  4. Screw in the pilot jets and allow full travel to the throttle cable is
    all you need.

    However, never having raced a bike, I really don't know whether getting
    rid of tickover helps, or not.

    The only plus I can see is that if you prang it, the engine is more
    likely to stop, making a fire less likely.

    Yes and no. If it had some wild cam in there chances were that it
    wouldn't idle unless you call running at 3k rpm "idleing". Ditto if he
    stuck some really big carbs on (as that reduces the air velocity so the
    engine has to suck harder just to get the air/fuel mixture moving).

    Quite a lot softer than MX bike IMHO.
    Also there is a vast difference between a trail bike and an enduro bike.
    Just look at a DRZ400 compared to a KTM EXC400.

    Which 500 Norton? Only going back post war or thereabouts, I think the
    Dommie had a 500 model, then there was the (IIRC) ES2, the Manx, the
    International, and not sure about the Commando. and '16H' keeps coming
    to mind.

  13. that about sums it up, from an article I read ages ago about dibble-mobiles.

    The dibbles also had a prototype 4WD (ferguson formula) Ford zodiac fitted
    with Dunlop Maxaret ABS. Dead rare, there were only one or two ever.
    someone's got one preserved somewhere. Classic Cages had an article about
    it.

  14. 16H would've been a side-valve, pre-war, I should think.

    Father had a 500T, among others, and I think an ES2 in a featherbed frame.
    The featherbed frame was later rebuilt with a 1000cc Vincent engine an
    trials sidecar, to form the D.A.M.N. Vincent. (Parent's initials are DS and
    M...) about which some wag was heard to comment "trust you pair, I suppose
    next year you'll have a bloody BSA"

    I daresay there are some pictures somewhere.

    There was a guy, 20-odd years ago, that put a Rover V8 into a featherbed
    frame. BIKE did a test, reckoned it handled fine, right up to the point
    where the engine dropped a valve.

    Forgot to mention, one of my first cars was a tuned 2.3 litre Vauxhall
    Magnum Coupe with 5 speed ZF box and limited slip diff, painted yellow
    with a black vinyl roof. That too was an ex-Met pursuit car and was
    festooned with NATO coloured wiring behind the dash and black plastic
    plugs in the roof where the aerials used to live.
