Have you or Krusty actually ever ridden a 380 Greeves in an LDT? Be
interesting to hear how you got on if you have!

When I was a wee nipper wobbling around on my TL, a mate who was only a
couple of years older had a 380. He seemed to spend most of his time
doing walking-pace vertical wheelies whilst hanging right off the back
    - talented bugger. He now races a Husky Centennial - the £12k special
dripping in carbon fibre & magnesium.

Sounds like a 380 Greeves is just the thing for LDT's..........!.
Wonder if you have ever taken part in any sort of competitive
    motorcycle event?

and different carbs/injection maps, & different cams (if 4T), &
different ignition modules with different timing, & different exhausts.
Feel free to post a link to an LDT photo gallery showing everyone on
    trials bikes Ken.

Also feel free to explain why the thousands of photos from several LDTs
in the gallery I posted shows the vast majority, if not all of the
entrants are on trail/enduro bikes. A trick of the light maybe? Or
could it be that Ken got it wrong (again), & can't admit it (again)?

Oh, & I didn't say the Greeves would be "a good choice", I said it
    would be "cool".

  5. if it was set up to be a racer, it wouldn't have had a tickover.

The wideline norton frame was reckoned to be bloody good handling-wise. You
could, after all, put a 1000cc Vincent engine in it and end up with a usable
bike. How many kawazukahanda frames of the 70s or 80s would stand doubling
    the engine size?

The OP asked about trials bikes, and as the TLR Honda is certainly more
of a trail bike, than a proper trials machine, it would be ideal for
this sort of event................but then again you wouldnt have know
that now would you! Wish you luck on the 380 Greeves in the next LDT
    you enter!

Oi Ken, you tosser! Did I actually *say* I would (or could) ride a
Greeves in an LDT? Did Krusty?

    No.

Read the posts before you start throwing abuse about. Please.

Krusty said it would be 'cool' and I said I 'love' those bikes, nothing
whatsoever about their suitability or otherwise.

If I was young enough, fit enough or skilful enough, it would be fun to
use an unsuitable bike, after all I assume there are still people
riding all sorts of old machinery in LDTs, at least there used to be.

As it is, I probably won't be competing on anything, thanks. That isn't
    the point.

Do you *really* enjoy criticising everyone?

Brilliant! I knew one of those. When I had a Greeves Scottish as my
(first) road bike (yes, really!) in 1977 I let an ace schoolboy
scrambler called, if I remember, Philip Small have a go. He was
probably only 13 or 14 and the Greeves was pretty heavy but the way he
flung the thing around! I don't think the bike ever fully recovered!
But I loved seeing it ridden properly.

The Vinnie engine only produced about 45bhp, IIRC..... Hell of a lot
    for the era, of course.

I know that was true for the Rapide, but didn't the Black Shadow
models make more than that as standard?

55bhp. Though IIRC the racers made 70 or 80. So within the capabilities
    of the featherbed based chassis.

It was. I was out on it for about an hour having fun. I think
ultimately I didn't buy it because I'd only recently got the XT500 and
my dada wouldn't sign a loan agreement for another bike. Bastard.

Aye, that was what he said. I wasn't absolutely convinced, mind. Why
would a race bike specifically not want a tickover?

You what? That makes no sense at all. On a closed throttle without a
tickover you'd get _more_ engine braking, not less.

But if the tickover was set high it would tick over, but high, right?
This one would just die if you didn't hold, or at least keep blipping,
    the throttle.

Heh. It ran fine on an open throttle, so I suspect there's something
in you setup theory. But I suspect it's much more likely that it was
just badly set up/balanced, which might show up in a very uneven
tickover, so he'd dialled it out by removing tickover altogether...

Try and learn to stop yourself posting in reply to questions you know
**** all about...............just because you used to own a TL125 when
you were a youngster, doesnt make you an authority on off road riding!

There really wasn't much difference, the engines were tested on the
brake (allegedly) and if they didn't quite meet specs, became Rapides.

If they didn't meet the specs because they were slightly tight, very
often they'd run in and be better than most Shadows.

The Lightning was a very different kettle of fish, and developed a *LOT*
more oomph. (Back in 1964 I lost a Met Dibble Daimler Dart on a Shadow
    which had been 'Lightningised'.)
