I've got an itch to scratch.

well, possibly. I can only imagine the facial-expression-challenged one
has seen a "CBR 1000 top speed" specification figure from 1989 or
something, and thought it must be more[1] than a 600.

In any case, taking off the fairing on WC's bike will have screwed the
aerodynamics (and maybe the fuelling - does something that old have
ram-air, or a pressurised air-box etc.?) so it's going to be slow in
comparison to a "as new" CBR 1000 in any case.

[1] technically, it /could/ be, due to gearing, but as you said, it's
    doubtful.

as with any such comparison, it'd only be a fair test if it was you
riding both types of bike, IYSWIM. IIRC, most of the 600s that day were
    ridden fairly poorly.
well, my CBR was a bit faster than yours, but the GSXR just strolled
away from me down the straight - no comparison.

Nope - that was another Kawasaki first (sorry, am I getting boring) on
    the ZZR1100.
Sure, not least cos his is an old snotter.

Well, as Darsy says, speed down the straight isn't a great measure of
power, as it is so very dependent on how well you accelerate off the
    corner.

what year was that, and what are you actually claiming a "first" for?

I ask because I know Suzuki had their "Suzuki Condensed Air Intake"
system on the GSX-R750 in '88...

Well I know that they had 'Ram Air' a long time before that, on
    early-1970s GT250s, 380s and 550s(?). But I also know that it wasn't
_really_ Ram Air as we know it today, and suspect the SCAI may fall
    into a similar bracket.

The "Ram Air" onthe Suzuki GTs from the 70s was just some fins on top
of the cylinder head that was meant to force the airflow to cool them
    a bit better.

From what I can see on the web, the Suzuki system just supplied cool,
fresh air to the airbox - I'm fairly sure the ZZR11 was the first
production bike to use a pressurised airbox force-fed by the bike's
    motion. [1]

[1] clumsy wording used to avoid someone saying "ah, but what about
    turbos?"

Doubt what you like, pal. I know what I saw.

I dare say our paths will cross sometime soon and then I'll happily put
my money where my mouth is and you can CIHAGM on it, unless you're
    chicken, of course.

The new 1000s are in a different league. I'm happy to lay on a bet that
my bike will out accelerate any standard modern 600 from 0 to say 150mph
    in a straight line.

CBR1000FL had a claimed output of 138PS, iirc.

Not as far as I know.

The FL is only three years in.

The sales brochure I picked up when I got mine has it as 135PS.

I also note that the buyer's guide, from Bike May 95 has a certain
Flitwick clothing salesman called Graham featured. :)

According to that, the FP was the first to get linked brakes, in '92.

  16. In uk.rec.motorcycles, Champ amazed us all with this pearl of wisdom:
Right, ok. I'm not kidding you. Me and a CBR600 pilot had a straight
drag race from several sets of lights and he was getting in the way. He
happily turned round round when we'd stopped at the back of traffic and
said "that's quick, innit"[1]. We then exchanged pleasantries until the
next phase and after another couple of minutes or so, went our separate
    ways.
My bike needs "input" to get it where it's going and my brakes aren't as
good as modern stuff. Blind faith in many cases.
