I just went to browse a "Getting Started" video at apple.com, but it
seems to be set up to only run on iTunes. I know some of you here use
iTunes, judging from past comments, so is it worth downloading? Does
it cause any problems, or introduce advertising, or is it A Good
Thing? FYI I normally just use the standard XP media player to watch
    movies and TV shows, etc.

    Thanks.

iTunes is bloatware on windows, but it does run okay.

vlc (from videolan) is a great video player for movies and TV shows.

Three Windows services needed for transfering files to an iPod. I sold the
gadget (was a present) and kept with user-friendly technologies like copy &
    paste files in Windows explorer.

Err, it works well for me. It is not fast if you have a library of a few
thousand songs, but it's not that slow as to make it unusable or annoying.

I have no problems using it, i have an iPhone and iPod so use it to sync
    those.

I have all my music on a USB drive that's mapped to the iTunes music folder
on all PCs, so which ever PC I'm using, iTunes on that PC thinks it is
working with its own music collection. Works well.

I use other stuff to rip and encode CDs as the encoders it users aren't the
    last work in quality.

It does install a few other services and stuff but I haven't noticed that
these services slow my PCs down at all or make them unstable in any way or
interfere with other programs so they don't bother me.

I only need it to view Apples movies from their website, so as long as
it has no reputation for trashing the PC or taking over, I'll give it
    a go.

    Thanks again.

Thanks for that well-reasoned and articulate response. I, for one, will
be steering clear of iTunes on my PC.

Oh wait, it doesn't run on Linux anyway.
