I can't read or hear about Tasmania without Gould's Book of Fish coming
to mind. Richard Flanagan's version, anyway.

Save it, probably: instead of depending on the wild lending practices
of banks to fund the development of second rate buy to let apartments
that nobody wants, builders would be employed, securely, to build
houses that people do want. If that means Barratt going out of
business while its staff get jobs with the council, that looks like a
    good thing to me.
The price to farmers is already below the economic cost of production.
Not necessarily: if supermarkets were paying a reasonable price to
farmers without increasing the price to the consumer, there is no
    need for a subsidy.

had 164 mm in 24 hrs, of which 15 mm in 10 minutes!)

  6. As native as they can be -- coconut palms are ubiquitous in the
tropical Pacific basin (and elsewhere) because their seeds drift about on
    the tides.

hangin' out for "a cool change".

  8. I once coasted an RD200 from the top of Mt Wellington to see
how far I could get. ISTR it was over 10 km, and if I'd kept enough
momentum to get over a small rise that I fell a couple of hundred metres
short of, I'd have got another 6 km. But maybe I misremember...

The day the nation takes to monoskis en-masse I'll agree - for now, though,
when the odd (in every sense) monoskier comes into view the collective
eyebrows go up and you can sense the inner response: 'Ce type, c'est un
    total wally'.

    Vive le Franglais!

But you can keep yer monoskis...

Used to happen most winters in Scotland. Not uncommon for rural Councils to
give priority to country roads leading to large dairy farms. My father was
    a director of the SMMB.

Hmm my g/f and I had a Salomon monoski which had outings in Scotland and
France. It was fun. My first outing on a 'Board reminded me on that
sensation of not being able to move your feet independantly.

  16. Yeah, that's why I stopped going home from Uni for the Christmas hols.
42 C and (guesses) 20% humidity in Canberra was a lot more bearable than
28 C and 99.99% humidity in Byron Bay.

  17. Yeah, I had to take the 650 Katana down to Vancouver Suzuki one
year to get 2nd gear replaced (usual problem) and the numpties in cars had
no idea about the conditions on W 4th. Several inches of rutted slush and
they're right up my back-end while I'm fighting for grip and trying to
keep a gentle constant throttle. Every time I had to back off that
high-compression engine locked the back wheel on the ice leaving me
slithering around with the myopic Canadians even closer to my tail-lamp.

Nobody ever fitted snow-tyres when they were supposed to, so the
first snow always led to some sliding around. Saw one guy in a big
Yank-tank put his car in reverse at a petrol station and the wheels just
spun so he floored the throttle; after an age of going nowhere I guess he
built up enough heat to melt down to the paving. He shot backwards and
halfway across Broadway -- luckily into a gap in the traffic!
