No, I meant this winter in Britain is a bit unusual. Yes, it's
midsummer there now. In Patagonia, you get winters similar to ours.
Obviously, right down near Punta Arenas, it can get a bit more savage.

  4. I thought that about California, but I got used to it pretty quickly -
the difference was dry heat vs humid heat back in blightly.

I'll take 40c in California over 28c in UK/NL any day.

Nationalize the land to build decent public housing, reinstate the
Milk Marketing Board and establish similar bodies for other
    foodstuffs.

  10. No, add London and quite a few other places. I was chasing work.
Blackpool was actually quite fun even though all the locals thought I
was mad. I didn't live there in the middle of summer though, which I
    believe is another story altogether.

  11. That's what I like about Hobart, Yasmania. You can jump on a bike and
be out of the CBD in 10 minutes and on some awesome riding roads. yet
the city is just bige enough population to hold music venues I liked.
I was going to gigs 5-6 nights a week. here in Melbourne there are
more gig, yes, but transport logistics are so much harder that I only
    manage about one a week.

Use directly employed builders rather than contractors to build the
    houses.
Right now, they are underproducing because they
In the case of housing, houses would be built more cheaply and rented
at reasonable rates, which would also keep down the cost of private
    sector housing.

In the case of food, prices would probably not change (unless you
believe that supermarkets don't really compete) but farmers would make
a reasonable income, rather than being shafted by the supermarkets,
who would have to take the hit on their profits.

its forecast to be 43c here tomorrow [1]. I suspect I may be sitting
in the shade and pool a lot.

[1] according to the bbc [2] others have it as a cooler 29c/31c.
    either way its warm.

Oh, I don't need a definitive answer from you, TYVM. I just want to
    see what Kevin thinks.

  18. Yeah well I had to work through last night. It was 35 at midnight,
didn't go under 30 all night. I was hoping I didn't have to go into
work today and could just could keep working from home. But around
lunchtime I realised I was going to have to go in. The heat was that
bad that several rail lines were down as they were buckled or had
powerouts. It took me 5 hours to go into work and back. I was there
for 45 minutes. If I had my bike I could have ridden to work in 15
    minutes.

Snow, heat? They **** you over either way.
