Right. Well, I do happen to have access to a recently-qualified ski
instructor who's now officially unamployed. She's doing some
unofficial teaching for a couple of mates from work next week, and
although still trying to find a proper job would be more than happy to
    take other bookings...

Oh, hang on, ou were talking about boarding, weren't you? Sorry,
you'll have to look elsewhere for lessons. Have you given any thought
to learning the proper skill instead?

Heh. Unfortunately not an option with my fucked knee. Well not unless I
had one wide ski rather than two narrow ones. Hmmm, now there's a
thought - wonder if it'd catch on?

  3. When you do, drop me a line, I did a couple of days at Mammoth last
year and loved it, and did 'okay', but need much more practice.
Unfortunately, everybody I know that does it is double black diamond
material, so that kinda leaves me billy no 'board mates.

Wuss. Jude skis with two knankered knees - one of them to the extent
where there is no meniscus left at all, so it's effectively bone-bone
contact. Both have had reconstructed ACLs
Heh. But seriously, while skiing is more associated with causing knee
injuries, it's certainly not any harder on the knees per se. Just
learn how to do it properly, set your binding release to about 4 (mine
are 8.5 - race-level bindings go up to 12) and you'd find it no more
of a strain on the knees than boarding.

What? You don't like a cheap (realatively) minimalist monkey bike that
can hop curbs? Granted it's no trials bike and a worn out 1984 500cc
Virago MIGHT out run it on a steep downhill run* but it's BLACK! It's
a 2smoke and the frame is the kind of funky that only italy or china
could pull off! What's to loose?

heh, central boiler with base board heaters. 8^) House was a nice
balmy 70F whilst it was -27F @ 1000hrs yesterday morn. That was
without firing up the fireplace in the basement. ;^)

oooo, oil thread! I've always gone with which ever I grab first.
Usually it's 3 in 1 oil OR Breakfree CLP. The Breakfree is slightly
better imho becuase it has PTFE in suspension. Now that is JUST the
motor it's self. for the fan bearing I just refill the real McCoy
grease cups with some moly grease and tight it down until a little
spooge appears around the main shaft. Mind though this was the blower
off my old garage heater...it is now used in the summer to move air
    through the house.

You know, you could just get a new knee. We're living in the future,
    after all. ;-)

So, go with the mates. Do your own thing and then meet up at the end.

That's what we do on family trips as my daughter is a demon while I'm a
    deteriorating intermediate.

In fact, I'm finding my declining skill level to be so frustrating that
    I haven't booked anything this year :(

  11. I might have neglected to mention that they're also in the US.
Surely going *more* often is the solution, not less?

Have you had some lessons recently? It appears to boost confidence and
help push towards that next level, or simply refresh to get back to where
    you were.

If we do end up going next month, I'll be doing just that. I've figured
out that I have so much leave this year that I need to take some time off.

  17. Cold and wet, a bit like Britain.

    (Not this winter, though)

  19. Well to be quite honest, compared to our living standards here in Oz,
that's seriously what it felt like to me when I was living there. It
surprised the hell out of me. Even though I married a pom I didn't
actually visit there til I was 46. It was quite a reality check. I'm
not having a go at you guys, but I'm certainly having a go at your
government as something has to be done. I'd still go back in live if
the right job came up. There's some fucking lovely places my bike mate
took me that just blew me away. But standard living conditions seem
way backwards to me. Get ou there and kick yer govt up the arse.

Our govt ain't perfect by a long way, and we've got our own problems
    as well.
