  3. Yes, OK, we've had two severe winters in arow. That *is* unusual.
Scotland doesn't count. And anyway, global warming means that it's rarer
than it used to be otherwise, as Bruce points out, the Aviemore and
Glenshee ski resorts wouldn't be in trouble. Although they're doing OK
    this season, I bet.

  4. You've answered your own question. It's a once-in-a-decade (often
longer) event. What is the point in pouring huge money over it?

Secondly, our winters generally are geting milder and wetter because of
the long-term climate change. Although we may have to think again if the
    Gulf Stream stops flowing.

Muddle through, live with the chaos for a few days, and then move on.

  5. Not true.
Remind me: who was it had all those nasty inner city riots recently? And
which country regards New Year's Eve inner city riots as normal practice
    these days?

Certainly beats sitting in a house with a broken boiler, looking outside
    at the admittedly pretty snowflakes.
    Good luck!

This is what I've been anyone that'll listen after they moan about our
infrastructure. I was in Whistler one year when a cold snap hit Vancouver
and dumped 3-5cm of snow, and the city ground to a halt. They just don't
get snow regularly, so aren't equipped to handle it.

Assuming people can get there. But really, I'll take a flight to the Alps
every time because it's just as quick (from the SW), with better
    mountains, food, and conditions.

I've just returned (from Flims) actually. However, as I said to Champ
yesterday I need to save my leave days at the moment. I'm not sure I'll
be getting any more days in this season.

Ah, OK. He's given up trying to persuade you to join him on a 3-day
    weekend later this month then?

  16. Growing up in Central Scotland I can say that the winters of the 60s and
70s were characterised by a fair bit of snow and it was unheard of for
Aviemore etc to be shut for lack of it. So loads, yes.

  17. Fucking ditto.
Bearings gone in the fan motor - tools fucking freezing, much joy.

I'm a man of many talents; unfortunately skiing isn't one of them. I
did do a couple of hours boarding about 7 years ago though. Despite
being very very ill at the time, I loved it so much I bought all the
gear when I got home - & haven't been again since.

So in short I'd love to come, but I'll wait until I can do a full week
or two & learn properly, or it'll just frustrate the hell out of me.

Your memory really is worse than mine, & that's saying something. You
sent me to Noah's Ark to buy all the gear!
See reply to Ace. Hopefully next year...

Seems to be the same here - fan was getting progressively louder until
it went out with an short, terminally horrible noise.
