It's warm and sunny in Chile

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by The Older Gentleman, Jan 7, 2010.

  1. It's 30-odd degrees south of Santiago, so maybe 85 degrees in real
    money.

    The sun is shining.

On my dining-room table are the flight details.

A few days in and around Santiago, then hop down to Temuco/Pucon for a
    few more days.

And, we devoutly hope, by the time we fly back, we'll have found
    somewhere to live.

    Rock on.

If *you* devoutly, hope, what do you think the rest of us are doing?

  5. In this weather? You bet.

This what The Doctor was drooling over today

A bit too far south and off the beaten track for us[1], but you get the
    idea.

[1] And broadband unlikely to be obtainable.

  9. Yeah - headng for 34C here today, the bit I don't like is we are
heading for a series of high 40s in a few weeks.

What I find funny is you poms getting surprised when it snows this
time of year. Spike Milligan made some comment about it but I can't
recall whether it was in one of his books or in an interview.

I'd prefer the cold than what we are heading for, you can only take
off so many layers of cold. And yes, the heat fucks us up as much as
snow. Rail tracks buckle, power systems overload as people turn on
airconditioners, etc, so the effects are similar.

  10. Oh, we're used to a bit of snow, but it never lasts. This winter has
been a once-in-several-decades thing and we just aren't used to that.

There is never enough road clearing kit, because it's silly to keep it
when it might be needed once in a decade. The airports don't have proper
snow-clearing stuff, let alone heated runways, for the same reason.

Poeple don't know how to drive on snow and ice because they don't get
the practice. Imagine a blizzard and sub-zero temperatures lasting
several days, if not weeks in, say, Melbourne. Same sort of thing.

  11. I was living there in 2006-2007 and there was a once in a decade
snowfall and Manchester and Birmingham ground to a halt. It's gunna
happen. Why isn't there more infrastructure and resources being put
into it? I guess it's the same question as to why there isn't more
being put in here as we are going to be in deep shit in a month. We've
already had 4 power blackouts in a month where I live, which is a
fairly central suburb of Melbourne. It's crap. I moved from Tasmania
last year and can't recall the last powerout in Hobart. The high 40s
we are heading for are gunna really **** us over. Especially as I work
in IT don't I? Computers don't run real well without power.

That seems a lot by local money standards?

    Eh?
When I returned from the Elefant last year the weather was about the same.
    Colder even.

Thinking back to childhood in Aberdeen most winters had *loads* of snow.

Bit off the beaten track by the look of it, but it shows what you can get.

Only in the south last year, and only for a few days. This has been going
on since before Xmas now and we have not been above freezing here for
over a week. We have at least another week of it. We are more used to
quick sharp hit, thaw, maybe another hit.
But not really *loads* Otherwise the ski resorts would be open more often :)

took a blunt brush and painted...
Steady on now, you'll have Auvache shouting at you that there wasn't any snow
at all until three flakes fell in mid April.

Actually more _reality_ than theory or hypothesis.

If you think about it, you know how it makes sense.
