Yup. Toldja ;-) And the sound, man, the sound ...
Not as (comparatively) pricey as it was, when HD-DVD was still on the
    go, mind.
Hmm. Fraught, that sort of thing is. I've considered Apocalypto as
it is reasonably priced and Bladerunner is under consideration, just
the version is in question. Most of my small collection has "Kiddly
    Ents" stamped on them:

    Spiderman 1/2/3 (box set)
    Speed Racer
    Batman - The Dark Knight
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
    Mad Max 2

    All the above region-free

    Wall-E
    Fantastic 4
    The Wild
    Night at the Museum
    Ice Age 2
    St Trinians

    All the above Region B

It's quite a chuckle but if I didn't already have a Wii I'd not have
    bothered.

Bought one from Comet today. £150 with two discs (Ocean's 13 and I am
Legend) to be picked up on Thursday(ish)

Very impressed with DVD playback so far. Doesn't seem to keen to talk to
my network so far, though. Anything I need to know?

    TIA

I spent about four hours last night playing Wii Family Ski, which is a
surprisingly good laugh. Might have to bung the snowboarding one on my
    wishlist for my birthday.

The bird in Wii Fit reckons I've got great posture and balance when
    doing yoga. She's clearly a know-nothing idiot.

  8. The only thing the network port is used for is firmware upgrades.

When the unit checks itself it doesn't actually find the latest firmware -
    which is v2.2.

Latest firmware can be found on the samsung website.

Yeah, just got it installed. Oddly it *still* claims to not have an IP
address via DHCP, which is why I assumed it had no IP address, oddly.

I'm now thinking it's just some shonky interface nastiness.

Would be nice if it came with a manual, though. Try some of these more
    esoteric settings :)

With the new Bluray drive, Media Center did the thing it did when I
built the PC, which was play DVDs with weird distorted/pixelated
video. So, I did what I did last time, which was uninstall the device
and let Vista find it's own drivers for it. And, now it plays DVDs
just fine *and* does full 5.1 digital down the SPDIF to the AV amp.
*And* does the same thing with PowerDVD, so Bluray disks now have the
full surround sound as their maker intended.

However, I don't see why the soundtrack on Bluray should sound any
better than that on a DVD that has a Dolby 5.1 track. Anyone?

  15. A normal Video-DVD (As opposed to DVD-A) is typically 448 kbit/s for
AC-3 (ie most soundtracks). A higher rate soundtrack, ie DTS, might get
up to something in the region of 912 kbit/s iirc.

Blu Ray on the other hand starts at a minimum of 640 kbit/s for dolby
digital and goes as far as 18 Mbit/s (yes really) for something like
DTS-HD master audio or other lossless formats. Typically DTS or DD+ (ie
most soundtracks) come in at 1.7 Mbit/s

  16. No worries. I checked out the specs when I needed to justify to myself
the need for a PS3, so that I could tell her 'just because' and 'because
Sims3 will be out soon for you luv'.

Played it on my mate's PS3 yesterday. Graphics are stunning even at 720p,
and the physics seems reasonable enough, even it you do seem to survive
every 200ft cliff drop that you land on your head.
I've been looking for a Fit for a couple of months, but not really
bothered enough to pay over the odds.

It's meant to be a lot better on the Wii, even without the HD graphics,
just because the controls are better.

OK, how about this - personally, I wouldn't bother. It's pretty and all
that, but really, you don't notice the graphics so much when you're
playing it, more so when watching someone else. It still has rendering
issues in some situations. And, at end of the day, it's just a computer
game that you'll waste £30-40 on and only play for a couple of weeks.

You'll be almost as well off getting the original SSX Snowboarding for a
couple of quid from some second hand tat bazaar.

That reminds me, I must buy the old SSX Tricky for my PS2. Best fun
I've ever had on a computer game that.
