Our John has just emailed me _again_.... argh!

Anyway - he phoned JB Racing in Warrington and they've recommended a
Quill system with road-legal tri-oval can.

They can supply for £505 and fit for a further £70......

Sounds like a pretty good deal to me - what d'you reckon?

I dealt with JB Racing when I bought my not-road-legal-in-any-way
Quills, and they seemed pretty good. Dealt with them face-to-face at the
Scottish Motorcycle Show, and over the phone afterwards, and they were
    very helpful.

And I'm very happy with my Quill cans - no idea what a full system would
be like, but I can't imagine there'd be much wrong with it.

And GBP70 for fitting sounds like a bargain.

It's a shitload of money. You looked at other systems, scorpion or micron?

Everything works out at about £300-£350 for header pipes and collector
box, plus the cost of a can.

Yes, it's a shitload of money - but VFR exhausts are. Hence wanting to
    find the best one possible.

False economy, IMHO, given how much of a PITA it is to change them.

It's _very_ lucky to find someone who can do it for £70 - I reckon they
only do that 'cos they're making a tidy wedge on the system, though.

It'll be _very_ easy to blow £150 getting someone to do the job, plus
the cost of an OEM system that'll most likely be just as rusty as his
current system in 12 months time.....

This is the point where you ask one question: How long does he plan to
    keep the bike?

On chatting to him last night, he says he has no plans to replace it any
    time soon.

I mean, it's been good for 120k miles so far, and still feels tight, so
there's no reason to suggest it won't do at least another 50k miles ;-)

That'll double the value of the bike, surely?
Don't forget that John's shite-old VFR is going to be a lot more appealing
to bike-thieves with a shiney new 'zorst system on it.

And I speak from experience (

    Heh. Not far off ;-)
This is true.... especially in Manchester. But I don't see many options
    for him.

    Oh, forgot to add....

All the fairing bolts are rusted solid, so they're being drilled out.

Whilst it's in bits he also plans to have the plastics resprayed in the
one true colour (1) and replace all fasteners with stainless ones.

When the new ones go in get some spray on graphite (about £5 a can) just
dust them lightly before fastening, and even 10 years later they'll
unscrew properly, but won't vibrate loose in the mean time.

Sounds like a good tip. Probably better than my lithium grease method,
    anyway.

(Mind you, I only use that because I've got a huge tub of it in the
    garage that's barely been used)

I've used (some kind of) grease on bits of the SZR as I rebuilt [1], but
was told this tip by a guy who builds race bikes and also does a lot of
off road stuff. So I'll be doing it next time I strip a bike i plan to
    keep (probably the ZRX).

The main advantage is graphite doesn't attract, or cling to dirt so
    lasts (almost) forever.

[1] Don't get me started on that rebuild, Fowlers just sent me the wrong
part, it's the last part I need to fix the leaky fuel problem [2].. I
was planning to get it MOT'd before Xmas.. now it'll be new year. *sigh*

[2] because it's sat in a garage for near on 2 years the seals in the
vacum fuel feed have cracked... you can't buy the seals on their own so
I need a whole new vacum pump. ho hum.. my own fault for taking so
    long.

Best part of 600 squid for bolting tuppence worth of materials in the

    It's all relative, innit?

We're struggling to find anything cheaper - the Motad kit gets shitty
owner reviews and costs largely the same sort of money.

It's a long way from being a bargain, but if they're doing fitting for
£70, I'd bite their hands off.

Too fucking right. My humble opinion has it that we are being ripped
off right royally by spares prices generally but the can suppliers take
    it to new heights.

I would love to get a few of them up against the wall and listen to
their pleas for mercy. Then shoot the thieving cunts.
