Nothing to do with the threat of being beaten by your spawn I'm sure
    :) Well done that man.

It's taken you a while to work that one out, hasn't it?
Me too. Passed it round the office, telling them this was what I was
going to be like in a depressingly small number of years. I've already
got the garage with an ancient 1970s Honda crouching inside it.

To which their only response was "What do you mean 'Going to be'?"

It's heartening to think that ukrm might still be here. God knows what
they'll be talking about. Being forced to remove helmets at battery
    charging stations, probably.

It's an advert, it doesn't have to make sense or even be true. More to
the point it's an advert about a bank, it doesn't uplift me, just
increases the flow in my bile ducts.

Heh, I was only beaten to that by 2 tenths of a second anyway. What, and
give his Bridgestone wet race tyres even more grip? Let them down a
    *lot*.

It did spur me on a bit. He was predicting that he would beat me as he
managed it at Manor Farm last September and Hartland isn't a power hill,
but I'd never been to Manor before and it's a horrible nadgery little
course on a caravan site. it remains to be seen how well I go at Loton
next time out as he will only be there as mechanic and gopher. No
juniors allowed at restricted entry meetings organised by car clubs.

  17. 2 tenths at what is your average speed? = 2 or 3 lengths, maybe more.
Which is a lot of daylight between you.

True, the top ten is often decided by the odd hundredth, but I had
managed to improve by half a second on my first 'timed run', so within
striking distance in October. I'm usually way further behind the podium
    places.

On my cycle to work every day, six miles there and six miles back, I pass
an old guy selling watches, quite obviously Fakestinian. Every day, we
salute one another in Hebrew, and every time, he looks as me wistfully as I
shoot past him [1]. And the way he looks at me, a young man now only when
compared to people like him, it's depressing because he knows that he can't
do what I do, and never will be able to again. And I know that the day
will come when I shall look wistfully at 'young men' able to accomplish
feats of strength or endurance that no amount of wishing will enable me to
    emulate.

Dr Johnson, as quoted in _The Confessions of an English Opium Eater_
    (Thomas de Quincy) put it..

'It is a just remark of Dr. Johnson???s (and, what cannot often be said
of his remarks, it is a very feeling one), that we never do anything
consciously for the last time (of things, that is, which we have long
been in the habit of doing) without sadness of heart...'

So if (or 'when') I'm visited by cancer or heart disease or a stroke or
whatever, I cannot imagine deriving any pleasure from watching a sunset on
a bike tour, in the full knowledge that it in all probability will be my
    last.

That's what's depressing. Not dying; getting old.

[1] but my aim gets better every day .. nyurk, nyurk ...
