Think outside the latest sporty box.

If money is the trouble and you stll obviously want something sporty the two
best value almost sporty types available are the Suzi GSX 750 F and the
Kwaka ZZR 600. They are both cheap to run, easy to ride, light on insurance
bills and can be put reasonably hard through the twisties. Brand new they
retail for $10999 plus on roads.

Hey I ride one (but I am both cheap and short, so what other choice do I
    have?)

Tend to agree here. The ZZR600 was a great bike. Very comfortable for 2-up
and those carbies made all the right noises. Cheap to run and enjoyable to
    ride.

    But what's the pose value?

Not a question in search of a cheap laugh, it's an honest question.

What causes someone to buy one bike instead of another? I think pose
value has to be a factor in almost everyone's decision to some extent.

Will a rider looking at a ZZR600 think "others will think it's a nice bike
and underrated, quick in the right hands" or will they think "others will
think it's a boring small bike, not enough go, can't be a serious rider,
if he was he'd have an R6"?

Sure - it's all in the rider's head. And it's easy enough to snort at
that and say that only wankers think like that. BUt I bet it's a factor
in quite a few bike-buying decisions, even if it's not spoken aloud in
    those words.

After all, if you are new to riding and get your culture from magazines,
then what do you absorb? That any bike that's not a racetrack refugee
gets a page if that, while the racers with lights get 5. The only
things worth talking about in a mag review are how fast it is and how
well it corners and how like a racebike it is. A good bike that doesn't
fit this pattern gets apologised for....

  6. Nope sorry, Freewind kills the DL650 in off roadablity (spoked wheels,
tubed tyres, simple air/oil cooling, lighter and you can bolt a 21"
DR650 front wheel in if you're that keen), not even in the same league.
On road it would have to be the DL out in front (but probably not by
that much), but who wants to ride on bloody roads? That's where the
    mobile tax collectors are...

Besides, by Vstrom I was including both the 650 and the 1000. Only
trouble with the Freewind is you have to source second hand which can
be hard whereas the Vstrom you can go new.

  13. Geez you are a wanker, Sharks!

I saw that UnderpantsGnome in your shed last time I was there, but I was too
embarrassed to say anything. I read all you bike mags in the bog and slept
in your spare bed with the "I love ZX-9 Ninja" bed sheets. I even used your
tooth brush that said "goes round corners faster than the average CBR". I
even saw that sticker that said "My other bike is a hyabusa, so get fugged!"

Next people will be picking on Volvos!

Naah you must be mistaken, read Zebee's blurb below, they only ever like
    race-reps. And hell it's not only not a race-rep, it's a ...BMW !

  16. I think so, from the tests you might remember the R100GS the press got to
use was a Purple and Black one. I rode that bike at one stage, a mate was
given it while his K100LT piece of shit (not K100s generally, but this bike
was) was in for major gearbox warranty work for the third time. They gave
the GS to him as a loaner and I got it bogged in the Kurnell sand dunes.

The mags do seem to prefer sporty race-reps these days though, BOTY doesnt
often go to any other type.

Anyway BMW make race-reps, what do you think the R1100S Boxer Cup is? A
    tribute to John Olive?

    Tribute?

Last time I was in Melbourne BMW Australia gave me a R1200CL to ride, thats
how much they thought of me.

The new K1200R race-rep could be a really neat bit of kit.

A mistake ? An attempt to make a non sporty bike appear sporty ? I mean
you could race cruisers if you wanted to as well, doesn't make them a
sports bike does it ? Besides, it's hardly a race rep if the bike came
before the race is it ?
    I didn't know he was dead ?

  20. Probably right John, just like the R1200C, but at least they've stopped
    making that one.

OK, the R80G/S Paris-Dakar was a race rep because it came after BMWs win of
    the event.
