I've been expecting something to crop up with the SOBoxer as I did a full
recon on the carbs but did not get the smooth idle or the quick start-up I
    expected.
It has been sitting outside for a few weeks making room for Shane's ZZR WIP
so a clean and a quick spin seemed appropriate in today's sunshine (1). It
started immediately and warmed up like a goodun but once washed and cold it
was very reluctant. A quick check revealed a weak offside spark, a swap of
plugs made no difference, so it was off with the tank.
    http://www.photobox.co.uk/public/detail.html?c_album=476902 and sure enough
the primary resistance is way out.

Bugger, that'll be £70 into the Motorworks coffer then....or will it. I've
been thinking about twin plugging it with a view to fitting the 40mm carbs
with a pro gas flow and valve/cam job. The Dyna coils to suit are £106.
Question for TOG though - is that sort of visible external modification bad
for value? given that it is a very clean low miles example of the model.
Similar question about the frame finish vs future value. It could do with
re-finishing and I would like to go down the powder coating route again, but
does it really need to be a standard black cellulose finish?

I will be needing some rather less restrictive silencers of course )

  2. Quite the reverse. Twin-plugging a ShiteOldBoxer is a recognised and
    worthwhile mod.

Hog was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever:
A guy in Germany does improved ignition systems for Boxers, mainly built
from BMW components - he's got a conversion to the R1100 coil which
works beautifully. I've had that on the GS after that coil showed its
.... to water and it works beautifully. Plus, it's cheaper than the
original. Link to his website should be amongst the BMW links on my
website. Just checked, it is - company's name is Q-Tech.
He's also got a dual-plugging kit for SOBoxers. AFAIR the price he
quotes is for the ignition system and the head work, don't know if he
sells the system on its own. As his site is in German only (or was,
last time I looked), let me know what kind of info you'll want and
I'll try to translate it for you.
As TOG says, it'll most likely increase its value as it increases its
usability. *If* you're trying to build a concours bike though, you
    shouldn't be doing this.
Again, it won't wash with the concours crowd, but I'd say it'll go
down well with the 'restore to use it' crowd.
   )

SORRY? I CAN'T FUCKING HEAR YOU!

Thanks I'll have a root around.
My first Boxer job (100S) sported a radical cam profile and a pair of megs
from a BOTT racer. It was the most crushingly loud bike I'd heard 'till a
    Seely Weslake last year.
