It's big, red, shiny, and it goes up and down when I pump it ...

Ok, I do use a steel blade. But it's usually a thin 9mm snap off knife
blade on full extension [1], and flat to the face.

But considering the knife wielder in this case I thought i'd dissuade
    him :p

    Cheers

    Paul.

    FROYFRNB.

I didn't bother in the end - the paper gasket was intact on the engine
    - not a hint of it on the cover at all.

A *tiny* smidgen of blue Hylomar later, and I did it up.

tbh, given the access available, and poor visibility, I doubt it's
possible to remove it all, anyway.

Staked. Two notches in the threaded shaft bit.

Assuming, for a moment, that someone had, very thoughtfully, applied
Loctite to the cleaned thread, but had, for some reason, forgotten to
re-stake the nut - would you tear it all down to re-stake it, or cross
    your fingers?

No. I can begin to imagine, though.

Ho hum. That's tomorrow night written off, then.

  8. If I was sure there was enough Loctite of the right grade, I'd leave it.

If it's only low-strength Loctite keeping it on just now, I'd take it
apart again and use a new nut and some Loctite.

Otoh,,, the nut's done up tight and threadlock is in place. It might be
    fine.

Well, nor have I. I've no idea how good it'll be. But it'll prey on your
mind for ages unless you make certain it's properly done.

A bit like "Did I leave the gas on?" with the possibility of flying bits
    of metal.

Depends, is this a nut where you knock the soft lip of the nut into a
groove ? or is it a foreunner of the nylock, where notches are cut into
the top of the nut, which splay when the nut is tightened ?
Heh, I have one of those on the 4X4. The front hub nut is secured by a
lock plate which is held on by the (OEM fit) tiniest camembert set
    screws you can imagine.

Wish I hadn't taken it off to regrease the hub now. What the eye
    doesn't see ... !

    Cheers

I sold my IIA shortly after a front hub fell to pieces at speed[1] on
the Tring by-pass. As well as the obvious pant-filling that resulted,
and horrendous cost of replacement parts, I never felt I could trust it
    again.

[1] For shite old Land Rover values of speed.

Get a drill bit slightly smaller than the groove and (carefully) use
mole grips to pull the side/end of the drill bit into the side of the
nut alongside the groove. Use a bit of copper sheet opposite to protect
    the threads if necessary.

    Cheers

    Paul.

Strange, those things are bulletproof. Can't remember, but I think it's
opposed enormous lock nuts on there, backed up with a lock washer. I
certainly needed a new box spanner to do it.

They have a tendency to do halfshafts, but bearings are unusual as long
as there's been no water ingress through the swivel balls ..

It's been re-staked. Two hours of spanner twiddling, just to centre
    punch a nut.

Then I took out the rear wheel, and remove the drive shaft assembly.

First time I've done this, but I assume this shouldn't be announced by
half a cup-full of rusty water?

Anyhow, cleaned it out, liberal application of Kurust, and a damned
good spray of WD40 later, a big splodge of grease, and the new shaft
unit was attached, and the new wheel, with the new disc. New EP80 in
the crown wheel thingy, and I decided that 21:40 was plenty late
enough to still be in the garage.

Rest of the back end back together tomorrow, then it's time to look at
    the front, once more.

  19. Did this water pour out of the driveshaft tube? If so, is the front boot
    still tight or hole free?
