If the S4 vs S4S is the same difference as the ST..... you want a 4S you do.
I could nip down see that one in Huddersfield I expect.

    I wouldn't mind a LC4 - can't afford an 8, and also I'd give it
another couple of years of existence before I'd consider one. LC4's
not much use in the touring department.
    see reply to Chris.
    ugh.

The Voxan was the most planted unshakeable bike imaginable in corners, a
    real joy.
It doesn't have anything like the performance of a Monster though.

yellow's my second favourite colour for a Ducati (the first being
    silver)
    you're right, and yes, it's the 916 v 996 engine that seperates the S4
and S4R (no S4S), and some cosmetic changes. I actually prefer the
    look of the 916-engined bike.
I'm not spending that sort of wedge on something I've not seen...

It's only up the M1 a bit. You have GT-type car so get yourself out
and do a bit of GT-ing.

Well obviously you would need to go up see it!

Doesn't the 4R get ohlins rather than showa on the S4?
The difference between the 916 and 998 in performance terms is ever so
    noticeable

Yeah, planning to. I've got to drop a bike off for an MoT first thing,
and then I'll come round. Can you email me with your address and a
phone number (this Google addie is defunct, btw - use the Pipex one).

So probably round about 11am-noon. I've got to unload the car first,
because I've got an entire dismantled bike living in it while I try
and sort out some space, but I'll do that tonight. If you want me to
have a look at the Rosner bike that'd add an hour on, mind.

....since I made a post about not being able to make my mind up about
what bike to buy next, but since I currently don't have a road bike, I
need to make up my mind.

Problem is, everything I've tried is a bit shit, or out of the price
range that I've set myself (£4-5K)

Here's what I've ruled out (which will give you a rough idea of what
    I'm looking for):

Suzuki Bandit 1200 (too common, had one already)
Suzuki GSX1400 (too fat and gay)
Triumph Speed Triple (I like the new shape, but it's out of the price
    range)
    Triumph Thruxton (hateful)
    Aprilia Tuono (ugly and expensive)
    Kawasaki Z1000 (gash)
    Kawasaki ZRX1200 (too green)
Any Honda (had more than enough Hondas to last a lifetime (2))
    Yamaha XJR1200 (meh)

The only other possibility is to revisit the Ducati Monster S4, and
fit flat bars to it or something.

Off-the-wall suggestions for anything I might have missed please...

You might get lucky and find a SuperDuke 990 for around the 5 grand mark.

I have a love hate relationship with mine; love it when it runs and hate it
    when it fails.

Pity I seem to hate it mostly. Then again it being fucked is the only reason
    I bought the ZX9 and that I like :)

Anyone here have a clue about these sodding things ?

    ZX9s or Guzzis?

So what does go wrong on a V11?

If it's any help, I'm told that the relays used on V11s are a bit shit
and should be replaced PDQ. Come to think of it, so are the ones on my
bike, though to be fair they haven't given trouble for a year ot two
    now.

    [snip list]

So the spec. appears to be:

    1) roadster, possibly a 'retro'
    2) look good
    3) fairly upright riding position
    4) price limited
    5) just a bit different
    6) not gay
    7) built-in stowage for a pipe & slippers not necessarily a turn-off
    8) engine config doesn't matter

    How adverse are you to
    i) unreliable bikes with
    ii) heavy depreciation?

I'm thinking older Buells here (i & ii), or Guzzi V11s (possibly just
    i).

There's a bloke who works in a Cambridge bike dealers who's got one.
He says it's great to ride.

Personally I'm more tempted by a Breva 1100, purely for the riding
    position.

    Pity neither has a half-fairing.

I think I'm getting old. Comfort's starting to matter.

Ok not all the Italians fault, but to start with the alarm went dodgy,
closely followed by the fuel pump (since replaced with pump for a BMW 735!),
relays (swapped out for sealed units), oil cooler brackets snapped and now
the bloody thing cuts out completely after a few miles. It runs sweet then
after 8 miles or so just stops as if you pressed the kill switch, leave it
to cool for a while then it will fire up again and continue on before it
    happens again.

I was thinking coils, but what would cause them both to fail at once ?
Either that or something to do with the injectors, maybe :s
I'm pretty sure it must be electrical as it just cuts out dead with no
spluttering. Of course this problem happened the week before the NW200,
hence I got the ZX9 to get me across.
