....since I made a post about not being able to make my mind up about
what bike to buy next, but since I currently don't have a road bike, I
need to make up my mind.

Problem is, everything I've tried is a bit shit, or out of the price
range that I've set myself (£4-5K)

Here's what I've ruled out (which will give you a rough idea of what
    I'm looking for):

Suzuki Bandit 1200 (too common, had one already)
Suzuki GSX1400 (too fat and gay)
Triumph Speed Triple (I like the new shape, but it's out of the price
    range)
    Triumph Thruxton (hateful)
    Aprilia Tuono (ugly and expensive)
    Kawasaki Z1000 (gash)
    Kawasaki ZRX1200 (too green)
Any Honda (had more than enough Hondas to last a lifetime (2))
    Yamaha XJR1200 (meh)

The only other possibility is to revisit the Ducati Monster S4, and
fit flat bars to it or something.

Off-the-wall suggestions for anything I might have missed please...

    Habana Custom?

Yamaha FZ1 - seems to be bang in your price range and looks rather
    pleasant in the flesh.

if I were going to buy a scooter, it would definitely be a gorgeous
    Piaggio MP3 250...

Well one of the Monsters has the 996/998 engine I believe, S4R. They use a
conventional top yoke with bar clamps so fitting a set of fully adjustable
Jota bars is an hour of work and £55. I don't really see why you are dicking
around given that we know you like them, excepting the riding position.

Quite near me, 998 engine right price.

If you can find a good low-miler (and there are some around), how
about a Triumph Thunderbird? So much more bike than the silly
Bonneville series, and if you go for the Sport version (with the funky
exhausts) half-way decent performance and brakes, too. And they're
    cheap.

Ignoring the WC angle, the first one I found on biketrader was an 06
with 2k miles at £4999. If you insist on going new then yeah, it's out
of your price range, but if you want something new for under 5 grand
then I see the word 'Hyosung' or its ilk in your future.

The S4R is the newer one, with the single sided swing arm and 2
exhausts on the right. The older S4 is what I looked at before.
it was simply the bars felt at the wrong angle, so if this where
    changable, it'd be a goer.
    that's the one, yeah.

I don't really like the look of them - a bit too "cruiser" for my
    tastes.

I think I might like to own one at some point, but not as my sole road
bike (which this next purchase will be).

While WC's Fazer is certainly a good bike it seems to have been sanitized.
It just doesn't wheelie or stoppie as you would expect.

I should have said - I'm definitely /not/ going new (though bear in
mind you can get new B12s for that sort of money now that the 1250 is
    out).

    <mode=try again>

If you can wait a bit[1], the new Street Triple might *just* be within
    range.

[1] And let's be fair, this has been going on for ages

Actually, is Carl Rosner's near you? If so, could you pop in and give
me your opinion of a yellow Monster S4 they have at a 1/2 decent
    price?

And are you still coming to collect your shit on Saturday?

which part of "since I currently don't have a road bike" did you miss?
I need a bike ASAP now, as it's already well into biking season for
    me.

actually that looks like a bit of a steal....

Well I'm sure it could be "arranged" to have the bars changed if your not of
    a mechanical persuasion.
