It's a question of insurance

Bloke at at work has just told me he has ordered a new cbr600rr and
takes delivery in a months time.

He hasn't ridden on the road for about 7 years, however, he used to race
    125 twosmokes for many years.

He has arranged insurance: fully comp for £900 but has told me that
this includes a " no commuting" clause, to save him £300.

I said that sometime during the summer he will probably want to ride to
work and it would be worth it - saving money by not sitting in his car
in traffic for two hours, less commute time etc.

His eyes lit up at the thought, but then he said " I need to save the
money though, so I will still drive tto work"

    " I see" say I.

Then he says "But I *have* booked two track days at Brands . (1)

    FFS !

1.I mean It's not as if he is skimping anywhere else; he has spent
serious money on good leathers and a lid.

  2. Commuting to and from one place of work providing no business is done
during the process shouldn't cost a bean.

I would expect occasional business use to perhaps save that amount of
money, but not Social, Domestic and Commute.

He does know that if he bins it on a track day he won't get anything
    from the insurance?

On a related note, I got my cover note for the bandit this morning, and
now it appears I am covered third party on any other bikes, when
previously (same policy different bike) I was not. Ho hum.

Yes, I should have made it clear I had not heard about commuting
    clause before.
Time to get him a coffee and drop that question to him.
    With whom ?

Any idea how to save money on insurance when 23yrs old? Could I become the
named rider on an older person's policy, such as my brother for a cheaper
    rate?
I'm not even going to bother asking what it would cost me (24 in 9 days, no
no claims bonus, no points, licence held over 2 years) for the Rocket 3, but
if I can get an old codger on it, then become a named rider life may be
cheaper and the bike may become affordable :)

    Are you fully comp?
Oddly, my car insurance (which is - dunno if it applies to TP though) covers
me to ride other people's bikes under 3rd party, whereas it doesn't appear
    that my bike insurance does.

Getting and oldie to insure and then name you can work out cheaper, but
not usually substantially, and of course you don't get the No claims.
Hahahaha - get yourself a SOB if you can't afford to pay through the nose.

Ways to lower the premium include garaging and increasing the excess.
Take pillion coverage off might shave a little bit more, take 3rd party
for all other bikes a few more quid, but I doubt it would be dramatic.

I dunno. Rush hour commuting is an increased risk[1] so I'd expect
them to charge more for it. I've always asked for sdp+commuting
though so I wouldn't know how much it would be without.

[1] 1 out of 1 Bens had 2 out of 3 accidents while commuting.

But insuring a ficticious moped for a year *beforehand* will give some
    no claims. >;)
Makes very little difference, IME. I tried all that to get VFR800
insurance down from £1500 and only managed to get it to around £1350.
I ended up buying a bike in a cheaper ins. group.

Also, with some companies, I was quoted *more* for TPFT than
    Comprehensive!?

Don't bother. You may get slightly cheaper insurance, but you won't
get any NCB so when you try and get your own policy you'll still get
    battered on price.

Just find a bike you can afford to insure.

But no use when you get asked how many years you're had bikes over
600cc which is quite common IME when getting insurance on bigger
    bikes.

There are no two ways about it, if you're young insurance is expensive
for big/new/powerful bikes and you just have to accept you either pay
a lot of money or you ride something smaller/older/slower.

  12. Not necessarily. I believe *some* insurers allow track use as long as
there's no timing equipment used and no racing.

heh, I wasn't stamping my foot as I wrote that. I just pay the bill
for the bike I want to ride. If I couldn't afford it, I'd be riding a
    different bike.

  17. Should "commuting" be on the certificate for it to be valid for that?
My insurers don't put it on any more, but insist that I am still covered
    whilst travelling to work.

That's interesting I'm with them ATM. I might just give them a call and see
if it is a general change applying to all policies and more specifically my
    one.

  19. I don't know about *should* but all my policies where applicable have
said "commuiting to and from one place of work where no business is done
    on route" or similar.

    well you'll remember I posted not a fortnight ago saying I wasn't

    was correct. Now I am.

I'm not going to argue, it's on the cover note that's all that matters.
