I think Steve means the amount of interest these days, not back in '69.

I was totally engrossed back then, but anything that's being done now seems
to be half arsed in comparison.

  2. Surely if you have a Humungous Ravening Death Beam on your side the
politics pretty much ceases to be an issue. I imagine you would be able
to more or less dictate terms.

And the cunts at NASA are reusing the "Orion" name for some
puny capsules. I tell you, they will be first against the
    wall when the revolution comes!

So you think the space travel thing should be conducted in a Syd Barrett,
Pink Floyd like manner of just ingesting way too many psychedelic
    substances.

Spacy! It may work though. At least from a participants point of view.

Oh come on, it's not *that* fucking big. I can see it all from my back
    garden.

My RE lessons were delivered by some particularly dangerous nuns with
    a vicious streak !

The US are capable of nuking the Chinese pretty much flat and yet they're
not dictating terms to them. As long as we're stuck on one planet absolute
space superiority does one no good.

Well, OK, an evil scientist on a moon could dictate terms to Earth nations,
if he had a HRDB at hand. But then he would be visited by James Bond and
blown up, so why bother? :)

  17. So do it in 2 stages:

Stage 1 - go to asteroid belt and grab a nice asteroid with lots of
volatiles (or spin one out of water-ice)
Stage 2 - Attach ion drives to lump of volatiles and ignite.
    Ramscoops have 2 main flaws:

    Hydrogen passes straight through them
They tend to act as a brake..

Yeah, if only we could convince the Christians and Muslims that there is
a message on Mars that definitely says which God is best [1].

[1] JFKs wonderful diversion from nuclear armageddon worked really well
during the cold war. Can't think of another scenario in this day and age
that might attract the resources required from both sides of the latest
    episodes of the Christian Crusades.

  20. I enjoyed them - I loved learning about other faiths. My teacher didn't
enjoy them though because I kept asking questions he couldn't answer
(which wasn't surprising - RE was the short straw that was given to new
teachers. And didn't seem to require that the teacher actually knew
anything about RE other than how to read the textbook..)
