    Quite so.

Images from 'Rimmerworld' , with Champ superimponed, had by now
stopped haunting my nightmares, so thanks for bringing it all back,
    three weeks on...

They'd all conform to a certain physical stereotype, mind.

But it was entirely the wrong shade of pink in the latter part of the
    afternoon.

  6. Hi

Thought you might like to know that I passed the Yacht Master theory OK.
Next week I'm off on the North Sea in a 36 footer for a week with an
examiner and crew. There are 4 of us taking it together. We crew for
    each other.

To say I'm a tad nervous about it, is an understatement.

    Good luck.

My recent trip to Kefalonia has made me want to go sailing again so I
may well do my Day Skipper next year.

The North Sea, in mid-October - how hard can it be?

You'll be fine, I'm sure. What's the weather forecast?

    Ace, Oct 8, 2009
  13. Thanks for that.
Well it's now moved to 10+ days away.

So nothing is too relevant, but for those who may be interested.
Rather than the weather and shipping forecasts, what I do use, when I'm
diving on wrecks off of the NE Norfolk coast, are the following:

    http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/marine/inshore_forecast.html?area=5&t
    ype=All

    But not always 100% locally.

    http://www.metcheck.com/V40/UK/FREE/synoptic.asp

Lets you make your own mind up.

But logging on to the gas rig weather stations gives you a real time
    outlook.
    http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=62142

Plus access to all the buoys and ships linked into NOAA with weather
    stations.

I did like the quote on another thread:

"Ready to go about" is not a question!

Yes, but don't forget, I'm _not_ YM certfied, so what do I know, eh?

How much of your time on board will be sailing/boathandling stuff, and
how much about navigation etc? I always find boats of that size a real
PITA to do proper navigation, due to over-small chart tables and
having to climb up and down all the time to take and plot bearings.
Plus taking bearings in itself is not easy in a storm. Or don't they
make you do that sort of stuff these days?

Always hoping you don't need to demonstrate distress signals for real,
    of course ;-)

    Ace, Oct 8, 2009
  15. I understand I have to demonstrate the ability to do both, plus an
emphasis is placed on the ability to command a crew.
In my experience, if it is a grotty thing to do, they will make you do
    it.
I'm thinking of taking my Diving EPIRB with GPS and SAT comms with me.

Do you get the impression I have only done fair weather sailing before.
And I only go out on a RIB to dive when the sea is flat(ish)
