They really did **** that up. My understanding is that one of the US
news stations (NBC?) (1) showed the footage with the music as a
background and it created such an impression that it replaced the
    original.

I'm sure the people who originally wrote and performed it couldn't
make their minds up whether to be proud or fucking gutted.

    (1) It might have been a Canadian station actually.

    My god. I'm not alone!

The evils I got from people when I said the song was ruined for me
were unreal. And not just at the time, someone had a go at me for
    saying it more recently.

    You're never alone...
For me it was an early symptom of the Dianification of Britain.
Emotion over reason. My general feeling at the time (and remains)
"why are people trying to subsistence farm in semi-desert?

  5. Some people get like that over good tasting food ;-)
A population unable to move from its native region because of lack of
means, they were initially able to sustain their existence and expand
    till they reach a balance.
Then came the famine of 1970.
Followed by the famine of 1980.
Then *total* failure of crops in 1984

The government response to this was to forcibly resettle people but not
provide any infrastructure or support. The idea was they were moved to a
more fertile areas but the areas were not fertile areas. They were moved
to remove them from rebel controlled areas, to government controlled
areas. A concern was the rebels may recruit men by offering food. The
government were more interested in feathering their own nest and looking
good with their successes in the main city rather than be embarrassed by
their failure to help millions of starving Ethiopians.

It was one of these arid areas that Michael Burk did his news report
from. The place had attracted people from the surrounding area because
of rumours of food being distributed.

The government spent nearly $200 million on a 10th anniversary of being
    in power at the time.

When told this, Geldof was quoted a saying "If you put a Communist (I
think the Ethiopian government were Marxist) government in charge of the
Sahara they would run out of sand in 10 years."

OK I'm up for being corrected about this lot as it was done from memory.

  7. Ethiopia isn't really semi-desert, though; it's remarkably green.

Wierd. Have you spotted any black helicopters recently?

  12. OK here it is on the NG
Just though it was easier via email.

    Looks
    No black helicopters

    Hi
Basically the email I sent was about Neil Murray saying he was off for a
week on a Turkish gulet, bimbling around the Aegean and you replying
that you had been sailing round the Lycian coast for a couple of weeks.

J and I are thinking of a flotilla or bare boat charter in the eastern
Med. Any pointers for or against from your experience. Greek or Turkish
    waters.

I'd sooner get it from some one I know (all be it on UKRM) than from a
    brochure.[1]
I've got about 2500 hours on a big RIB and 600 plus on 28 foot and 33
    foot yachts.
I don't have one of these new fangeled ICC tickets but I've nearly
finished my Yacht Master shore based ticket and looking for my previous
hours to be taken into account.

    What do they need?

[1] My next door neighbour has his own travel agency in Fakenham. He can
organise flights and transfers if needed etc. He's part of the reason I
can holiday to foreign parts six to eight times a year. His last minute
cheapies can be outstanding. The brochures for boating all say they are
    the best etc.
