Well as an exercise in engineering, I'd suggest it worked. But whas it
ever built as a realistic mode of air transport?

Of course it was. 70 orders were placed.

  6. The idea was this was the first step to a more practical version,
Concorde B. The RFQs were out and while I was an apprentice erk at
Marconi they were working on it.

It could have been, filling the role of the First Class cabin.

We're working dangerously close to a reference to the TSR2 here.

  8. Shhh! You know I'm easily hooked.

    Nice fast stable platform though..................

  9. I've just been looking at old footage of the Live Aid event.
To do the two gigs Collins needed to go from the UK gig via helicopter
to Heathrow and land in the dispersal area next to Concorde. A transport
would be waiting in the US to ferry him to the US gig.
BAA said they wouldn't allow it as it contravened their commercial (not
safety) rules. According to the commentator rattling on, Prince Charles
contacted them and said if he was flying Collins helicopter on whose
authority would they deny him landing rites, or so the commentator said.
BAA caved in and Collins helicopter landed next to Concorde (without
Charley flying it). It came out later that Geldof had contacted the
    palace to sort it out.

    Good old VHS tapes.

The bit were they play The Cars – Who's gonna drive you home to videos
of kids dying still brings a lump to my throat.

I hated what they did to that song. For years afterwards radion
stations only ever played the bastardised version with screams and
    crying.

  11. Never heard that version but I can imagine what you mean.

Did you get my email about yachting?

  12. Spot on.
    Afterwards.

Fortunately they played the original at Band Aid. Geldof described the
choice of music and the video shown as inspired. "It was a water shed
moment when the cash just came pouring in." It had the commentator in
    tears too.

    Lucky you.
No. The address in my headers is valid, buit it's a web-based service

Aha! Sorry, when you(?) said on Earth I thought you meant, errmm, on
Earth, which if my memory serves me aright, is closer to 300 watt/m^2,
but since we are talking about spacecraft, then at 1AU I would have to
    agree.

I remember this argument from somewhere wrt to solar panels on roofs,
although it's not to be sneezed at, it aint as much as a lot of people
think, *then* you factor in the panel efficiency.

    Tosspot, Jul 23, 2009
  15. And in the long term its 'half life'.

The length of time that the output reaches half of that it started with
    under the same illumination.

5 to 10 years is not uncommon on high power high efficiency panels.

That bad! I thought it was closer to the 10 end. Mate has one of
those groovy vacuum packed ethylene glycol jobbies for heating water
and it's quite amazing to see how well they work, 40C even on a cloudy
day, eeeek on a sunny summers day. I'd probably go for one if I
didn't have a gas powered multipoint and hence no boiler.

  17. I may have inadvertently misled you.

    I'm talking Photovoltaics here.

Nono, I was perusing at how bad PVs were for generating energy, when
aforementioned solar unit can heat water, which especially in colder
climes, is where a lot of your energy bill goes.

It really wasn't an efficient means of transport. It was a wonderful
feat of engineering of which everyone involved should be proud but as
    a passenger aircraft it sucked.
