IT LIVES . . . .{ it's life Jim, but not as we know it }

  1. Wotcha.

I now know how Dr. Frankenstein felt.

After the best part of two years on the bench, the "project B33" ran for the
    first time on Sunday.
OK - so it's an old BSA - almost fifty years old, but to me it's been the
thing that I've spent a lot of time and money on. I've always wanted an
alternator B33, and now I'm a damn sight closer to having one.

I really don't like to say how much money I've sunk into this, but as far as
I'm concerned, it's money well spent.

All in all, a great way to end the year . . . I can feel a celebration curry
    coming on ;-)

  2. Hm. Couldn't get a picture on my Mac, but heard it running. Well done!

  3. pictures work here in VLC. wonder if VLC runs on the mac?

Is that a belt primary drive? I thought they had chains?

Glad I saw that before I looked - not set up for sound here.

It has a lot of things that the original didn't have.

Belt primary drive. - Tony Hayward, Triumph set up, modified.
Front disc brake. - Once again, Triumph, T140 Bonnie.
Cartridge oil filter. - Saves the crank, for the sake of £ 23
Longer throw crank. - A bit of an error with the flywheel / crankpin hole
Larger valves. - with seats to take unleaded.
More stainless steel than you can shake a stick at.
Japanese switch gear. - I ain't a purest, I want stuff that works, and works
    well.
Direction indicators. - Today's drivers don't know what a hand signal is.

It keeps me happy. I'm worried that once it's up and running, I'll have
nowt to spend my time and money on. I dare say something will crop up.

    Looks great.

Wish I had the staying power to complete a project like that.

I think it reached a point where I had no choice but to continue.
The phrase "good money after bad" did spring to mind more than once ;-)

Sure it's not one from a M21? People fitted those to turn the 500 into a
    600-ish.

Yep - that's the "bit of an error"
    Someone didn't know there was a difference twixt B33 / B31 / M20 / M21
    flywheels.
By a stroke { see what I did there ;-) }of luck, I also had the "short"
    con-rod.
The whole plot works out at 540cc, and with just under 1/8th of an inch
barrel spacer, gives a CR of 7½ to 1.
These little things are sent to try us.

You can do the same trick with a Venom - makes (IIRC) a 600cc thingie if
you use flywheels from a longstroke MSS.

Hogmanay TAAAW - what a combination.

(Combination? Somewhere to keep the bottles?)

Last year, I trundled off to the bottle bank with the chair filled to the
gunwales. The load made little clanking noises and stayed quite flat on the
    corners.

Just come back from Naaardge, having intended to get 2 litres of thin
bleach, some loose tea and a jar or two of mild.

Got the bleach and the tea, but some sort of magnet drew me into the
    Whisky Shop...

    Heavier bag, lighter pocket.

    Happy New year all!

Looks and sounds nice. Why not go the whole hog, ditch the carb and go
    for FI? :)

Simple. I can understand Amal carbs. I can strip 'em down, re-build 'em,
and set 'em up to run right. I have enough Amal bits to hand so that I
don't have to go out shopping. A new 32mm Concentric will set me back about
£ 70 - I can live with that. FI is an arcane art - it needs magical
electric bits ( unless it's a Wal Phillips - and I've got one of those ),
fuel pumps, injectors and things I've probably never heard of. To me, fuel
    injection is a step backwards.
Belt drive is an improvement over the original chain. Alternator is an
improvement over the original. Disk front brake is an improvement etc. I
can't see FI being an improvement. The original "Monobloc" carb has been
replaced with a more modern "Concentric" - I may go for something like a
    Mikuni, or even a Dell'Orto, but fuel injection ? No thanks. . . .
There again, I do like a challenge ;-)
