CG125 + knobbly tyre on the back will go anywhere. :) Jokeing aside,
much can be said for little bikes in the winter when you don't have a
car. They're light, so you can pick them up easily and they're cheap to
    fix.

We had a flurry for 20mins or so this morning - half an hour later it
    was all gone.

Went out around 9:40 to get milk - on reflection a jacket over a
tee-shirt wasn't quite enough thermal protection for 20 minutes of
    trundling about.

Had one of those "ooh, 'eck!" moments on the way home - approaching
Heron Quays roundabout, needed to slow to allow a car to cross my
oath, so I roled off, down a cog, covered the brake - when suddenly
all I can hear is the unmistakeable sound of four locked-up tyres
behind me - closing a bit to quickly to be friendly. I eased onto the
roundabout, and the screehing stopped. Behind me (a good two feet or
so) was a Fiat Punto at 45deg to its direction of travel, across the
    "Give Way" markings.

Still, at least I got the milk home safely.

    *Do* be careful, Bond.

I had a stupid bitch following me (I was driving Sharon's motah) this
evening. She was two feet off my tail at 40 MPH (in a 40 limit) in light
    snow.

I did wonder for a few seconds whether to get a free repair for the
slight scuff on the rear bumper by means of a sudden ABS test, but
decided on the "slow to a safe speed" tactic instead. It seemed to annoy
her quite a lot. Which was nice.
    That's OK then.

Indeed. Insomnia strikes again, so I popped out for a fag on the
patio and noted it was all frozen quite well - probably minus 2 or 3 -
then a little flake dropped past my nose. Then a few more, and now
all of their mates are joining them. Should be interesting tomorrow.

There is eight inches (of snow) outside the house and it's still
    coming (snowing).

I think I'm going to take the bike to work anyway.

I finish work at 7pm today.

    Wish me luck.

It was a piece of piss. Easy. Anyone that can't do it is a fucking
    pansy. FACT.

I dug the bike out, cleared the exhaust and thumped the rest of the
snow off. Key in ignition, start, do a careful uphill U-Turn, pootle
down hill carefully slowing in good time before placing both footsies
on the road while coming to a stop. Emerge on to the main village
road with accompanying blizzard. Repeat for all horrid steep hills
and bends and just take it easy. Sorted.

I had a contingency plan to push the bike where I couldn't ride it and
just park it up somewhere if I needed to dump it (jam jar lid on
standby under seat) so I could walk the rest of the way to work if
needed but thankfully I did the entire journey on the bike rubber side
down. I did wear full Buzz Lightyear kit just in case (Diadora
mega-armoured booties, armoured trousers, back protector, armoured
jacket and a matching clean pair of pants and socks.)

Coming home would be the biggest problem as the snow would have
partially melted and re-frozen throughout the day. It turns out that
the journey home on ice was far easier than the journey down. Going
down I had to plough tracks through the virgin snow. Coming home I
just avoided the sludge (which had frozen into deceptive ice lumps)
wherever possible and kept to the ready-made car tyre tracks.

Off road tracks must be good fun.

This is true but riding in snow and ice is not without it's special
problems that really must be aware of.

Take for example the matter of a biker arriving within a hundred yards
of home and only needing to negotiate one ice covered corner before his
    parking place hoves into view.

Imagine the problem that faces him when as he indicates right to the
silly fucking cow in the mini who has been right on his back wheel for
half a mile of his intention to turn, which also includes slowing down.

Consider his dilemma when he glances in his mirror and notices that she
has somehow managed to get even fucking closer and he still needs to
lose another 10mph in 20 yards on sheet ice.

Ponder his embarrassment when he accidentally (instinctively?) touches
the brake lever as he tries to slow and yet not slow both at the same
time and the front wheel simply locks and the bike falls over with the
rider falling half a second later on top of it.

    or....

Why not? I thought it through logically, left plenty of time, dressed
appropriately, came up with a selection of routes to take with a
selection of back-up plans if I couldn't do it and approached it with
an open mind and a smile on my face. If I shied away from everything
that had a bit uncertainty I wouldn't get much done and life would be
    very boring.

    I also don't accept your "comedy-crasher" title.

I had considered this. Thankfully no fucking loons were on the road
this morning and I had most of it to myself apart from a few women in
4x4s that had pulled over as they couldn't negotiate a perfectly
    straight road.
Shit happens. I have to confront the world every time I go out my
front door even when there isn't snow.

You are riding along a perfectly empty road that you know like the back
of your hand and it is covered in 6 inches of virgin snow and you know
    you can go faster.

Accelerating just enough to have the back snaking slightly you progress
along to the point where that seam in the concrete kicks you up the arse
far too hard unless you hit it *exactly* 22 inches from the kerb
    arrives.

Life quickly turns from a hellova lot of fun at a relatively modest
speed to all hell letting loose and you and the bike ending up in
    different drifts.

One day it is going to hurt. When you realise this is up to you.

Stop worrying about him. It's obvious that he's not going to take any
notice so why waste your time?

Riding a bike is all about learning and taking in how and why certain
things happen. If Nick prefers personal experience then that's fine, I
used to feel the same and it didn't do me any real harm. For what it's
worth I still don't take that much notice of what others tell me I
should do on a bike and if I didn't have any other transport I'd use
the bike rather than walk no matter what the road conditions.
