How many died on the speed limited Isle of Wight for the same period?

I guess per capita is what counts.
    er, yes, almost certainly.

They've got a problem with youngsters who've recently passed their
test, driving around in kevved-up hatchbacks pissed with all their
mates in the back. The pro-limit rationale seemed to be that these
kids would suddenly become angels if there was a speed limit.

    And yet sanity prevailed.

Why can't that be applied on the mainland?

it's a trade-off, innit - you get to break the speed limit, but they
get to birch you and lock you up if you're homosexual.

Speaking as a speed-limit-breaking heterosexual, this doesn't strike me
as a problem, but it's not very egalitarian, I suppose.

so they're getting rid of 10 Kevs a year - you think the gubmint would
    see that as a *bonus*.

Though I suppose there's the cost of repairing road furniture and bus
shelters, and hospital bills to consider.

    well, according to:

    http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/im.html [1]

the population of the Isle of Man was 74655 in 2004. So, 10 road deaths
per year is, 1 in 7466 per capita.

The population of the UK (from the same site) is 60,270,708. According
    to:

    http://www.fiafoundation.com/policy/road_safety/policy_monitor/pm_06a102004.html

"3,508 people were killed on Britain's roads in 2003".

This gives the per capita road deaths in the UK as approx 1 in 17,000.
So, the Island is about 2.5 times as bad.

I can't be arsed looking any more figures up, but I'd be mildly
surprised if N.I. isn't worse again than the Island.

[1] the 12 nanometer "territorial sea" and "exclusive fishing zone"
    seem hardly generous.

Riding on the IOW is nice. It's like a much slower IOM, but with more pissed up
car drivers, wabbits and cow poo.
