Is winter riding possible?

  1. I am considering doing some skiing this year, but the only snow I've ever
seen has been in my fridge.

Is there anywhere in Vic or NSW that I can ride to with a heavy CBR1000 in
    Winter?

Do I need snow tyres or chains?

Dont do it. If there is no ice on the roads and blue skies it might be
ok, but who knows whats gonnna happen to the weather while up there.

Couple of years ago drove my brothers old toyota t18 from canberra to
hotham. 5 days later and time to drive back to canberra i spent a good
few hours digging the car out of a metre of snow. Roads north were
closed so had to drive all the way to the Vic south coast, east for a
bit then up the monaro hwy back to canberra (ohhh...and i had chains).

Would have been totally unable to ride those roads on a bike!

  4. Yeah, but Hotham is the _worst_ example of a bike friendly ski field in
Australia - the village is at the _top_ of the hill and you ski down
into the valleys. The road to Hotham is _always_ gonna be icy if theres
    enough snow to ski around.

My suggestion would be to ski at Perisher or Bluecow - you can ride to
the bottom of the Ski Tube and catch the train up to the slopes. You
_might_ get really unlucky and turn up in weather bad enough that the
road from Jindabyne to the Bullocks Flat (where the Ski Tube starts)
becomes unrideable, but thats _spectacularly_ uncommon...

  9. $34 return on the SkiTube from Bullocks Flat to Perisher/BlueCow

    http://www.perisherblue.com.au/winter/skitube/

$62/day for ski/pole/boot hire at Perisher (I'd expect prices to be
similar elsewhere, getting somewhat cheaper the further away from the
snow you rent them, which isn't much use if you're travelling by bike...)
