Is this a real BMW RS?

I like the look of it, but Timo and I are doubtful. It may be a
    dressed-up /7.

Points - ignition switch not on the dashboard between the voltmeter and
clock. Seeming lack of RS badge on the tailpiece. Can't see an oil
cooler (although the pix aren't the best). Timo also reckons the
pinstriping is /7 style and not RS. Can't see if the rear brake is disc
or drum - I think all RSs were disc but ICBW.

I've emailed the seller twice asking for confirmation - but no reply.
    That's a worry in itself.

Any input from the ShiteOldBMW congnoscenti?

TOG@Toil came up with the following;:
Did a quick check of the RAC website [1] and ETV 853V is a 980cc BMW, but no
model stated, so not much help at all really ... ;)

    Two things:
[1] Read his feedback - especially the two negatives from buyers.....

    [2] I'm not a BMW expert, but I don't remember RS's with that colour
scheme. However he says its "rare". (I remember silver ones and red
    ones and blue ones).

    Caveat Emptor.....

I think the pinstriping that's there is ok, but it doesn't appear to
have the pinstriping on the wheels, & the 'RS' on the sidepanels should
    be blue. But IAMASOBMWC.

    Noted.
It /looks/ like a BMW colour scheme IYSWIM, but I don't remember seeing
    any in it.
Everyone round here was too pikey to pay for BMWs let alone any
    "special paint"

    That's a brilliant site.

Something else I noticed - the RS always had the 'R100RS' badge on the
engine. And this one doesn't appear to have that badge....

If I had to bet money based on the pics its a dressed up 100/7 however
the pics are not good enough to be definitave. The engine and seat
badges would be the first port of call. Neither have I ever seen anyone
re-locate the ignition key from the nacelle to the (presumably)
    headlight shell on an RS.

It's pretty close to you for viewing anyway.

I would never touch an ATE calliper bike again, I like having proper
brakes. Look for a slightly later model with Brembo.

  14. If I remember right from my R100RS days the forks always had the
reflectors on the sides and it's a 'cast in' bit they fit in. The only
ones I ever saw with out them, still had the flat bit they fitted to.

And the ignition key fits in the hole between the clock and the ammeter
    as Hog said.

  15. The rear brake pedal looks identical to the one on my /6, although that may
    not be significant.

The back end looks the same too - but I don't know if that applies to disc
    brake rear hub/drive unit.

HBOL says 87-on RS has drum brakes, BTW. what age is it?

It's definitely had a lot of respraying done. The rear mudguard should
be black, I reckon that for this model year (I had a 79 R100S) the
sidepanels should be black with a "1000cc" logo. The pannier brackets
look like aftermarket Krauser ones rather than the original BMW
fittings, and the rear seat rack isn't the original BMW one. Biggest
cause for suspicion for me would be the missing yoke cover and inner
    faring trim.

Might be a perfectly good ride, of course, but I wouldn't be surprised
if it was an ex-police R100.

Well, as somebody else pointed out, the seller already has two negs for
goods not being as described, so I think we can safely say that this
could result in a third, if the lucky winner realises they've been
conned. And I still haven't had a reply from the seller, needless to
    say.

For me, the key tell-tales are the ignition switch and the missing
    badge on the engine.

My last RS was actually a dressed-up S, which in some ways was an
improvement. It had the desirable taller final drive gearing of the S,
plus spoked wheels which I preferred to BMW's soft alloys of the
period. And the S came with the same 40mm Bings and the big-valve
    engine as the RS.

    Pic here

But this one.... there's no telling what it started out as. Except that
    it wasn't an RS.

I'd concur. My R65"RS" still has the ignition switch below the clocks.
The ignition switch hole in the fairing has the switch to turn on the
backlights on the clock and volt meter (dodgy home-made loom)
They're not too bad if you ride as slowly as me ;-)

1979, as someone who would've looked at the header of the auction would
    have noticed :)

Actually, with a total feedback of 83 he's managed to accumulate 9(!)
negs. And if you look at the feedback from buyers only there's a third
"not as described" hiding on the second page.
Digging through his feedback I'm getting the impression he's a bit of
an Arfur Daley. As I've said before, nonwithstanding the fact that
matey is pretty much on my way home from work I shall not waste my time
    looking at the bike.
