    Hello

I am bringing a 250cc Suzuki GSX250FX back to Ireland from Japan with
me soon. I'm just after noticing that their is a 25KW restriction for
the first two years of holding an A licence in Ireland/England. The
bike power is 29kW and it weighs 151Kg.
    Full details here: http://www.suzukicycles.org/GSX-series/GSX250FX.shtml

I was reading previous posts by some of the regulars, and Andy Hanson
said to a few other people, that the chance of getting caught are
    slim(riding too powerful bike).

Even if the chances of getting caught are slim, how do you go about
registering the bike in the first place? Surely you have to fill in
    forms, etc.
Would I have to tell a "little lie" somewhere along the way?

    Thanks for your help

  2. Firstly, I know bugger all about the law concerning motorcycle power
restrictions and many other aspects of the law; but what I would say is
that if you can live with your conscience and the thought that one day
you could be caught, then I'd say go for it.

What is the penalty for riding without a licence for a certain vehicle
    anyway?

Whinging Courier secured a place in history by writing:
Personally I could live with that part. The bit that would concern me is
    a) whether I could get insurance and b) even if I could, whether it might
turn out to be invalidated as a result of the infringement.

Minor legal infringements where you accept the penalty, no issue. Riding
without insurance and potentially fucking up the lives of some innocent
    third-party.....complete non-starter for me.

I dont know about the import side but where I live in Ireland the power
limit is determined by dealers putting a big washer in the intake and
taking the bike out for a ride. If the bike maxes out at 100mph, that's the
correct size washer. When this is done they give you a bit of paper which
is required by your insurers. What then happens to the washers is up to
    you...

Have you confirmed with the DVLA[0] or its Irish equivalent[1] that your
Jap licence would be converted to a restricted licence? If you have been
riding for 2 years after passing the Jap test [2] then you should have a
good case to get a full, unrestricted Cat A licence.

In the UK, the restricted licence is issued to those under 21 and anyone
that passes their test on a sub 15kW bike.

[2] even though, as we established in your earlier posts, you only
    passed the Jap "intermediate" test.

The local plod around manchester didn't have a clue. I got stopped several
times when i was 18 riding a 600 bandit. Never once did they ask if it was
restricted (1) even after they saw my licence. I wouldn't do it because of
    the insurance implications though.

    (1) It was (2)
    (2) Got wrote off on the thursday as it was going to be derestricted on the
    friday. Gutted

Surely that was the infamous case of the man-walking-in-front using an
old flag that had washed to pink and was therefore no longer the
    correct shade of red?

You deserved all you got and were lucky not to be flogged.

In regards to my earlier post, I don't think there is going to be too
much of a problem. I got someone to ring the local Driving Test &
Motor Taxation Office in Dublin and no one knew what 25Kw meant.
Anyway, restricting, derestricting is much cheaper than I thought. I
just was getting worried, living in the Land of Rules. Remember, the
Green Cross Code is for life(over here anyway).
My next problem is finding a cheap shipping company to bring it back.

    Thanks for the posts
