Is my RXS100 worth keeping?

    Hi Folks,

This is my first post to this newsgroup - so please be gentle. :)

    Since about Aug 1999, I've had a '96 Yamaha RXS100 (its a 98cc learner
pop-pop) cluttering up a corner of my garage. It does belong to me but
I've never ridden it (I have a full bike licence - but haven't ridden one
for many years). I originally bought it for my nephew who lived with us
when he was at University - but he's now (probably) living in a cardboard
box somewhere in the West Country. The bike looks pretty much like new and
has done only 6000 miles. It started (more of less) first time when I
    kicked it over this morning.

I'm trying to decide what to do with it. My options appear to be:

    1) Service, MOT, insure & tax it - and then potter about on it myself. This
has attractions - but I'd probably get a barrow load of grief from SWMBO.

    2) Leave it where it is, in the hope that one day it will become a classic &
someone will give me a fortune for it. I will definitely get grief from
    SWMBO if I do this.

    3) Give it away to someone for a fraction of what it's worth. This is a
*relatively* low grief option. SWMBO has no idea what the RXS100 is worth.

    4) Try to find out what it's worth, sell it privately (I s'pose Ebay would
be another option) and buy some new tyres for the car. A low grief option.

    5) As 4) but put the money towards buying a trailie or old Land Rover
instead. This would be a stratospheric grief option if I did the former,
but quite low grief for the latter (providing it fits in the garage).

The sensible options are probably 1) and 4) - but I've yet to discover any
second hand bike price guides - and I've no real clue as to its value. Has
anyone got any idea what price I should ask, if I do decide to sell it?

What would you guys do if you had this problem? (Buying a Fireblade is not
    an option !!!!)

    Cheers

Yes, you're probably right. I bet that *is* a fraction of what it's worth.

Dunno - hence the question about price guides.

The half-dozen or so RXS100's I've seen for sale on web pages (Ebay &
elsewhere) have been both older and what, to me, seem to be *silly money*
    prices - like £600 !! I s'pose there aren't too many options for learners
who don't want to buy new and don't want one of those pansy scooter things -
maybe they just hold their price well.

Is there no bike equivalent to the Parkers price guides for cars?

    Cheers

Andrew Kay was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever:
600 quid is *way* overpriced as you can't take your full test on them.
300 is probably nearer the mark.
We call it TOG around here.

They weren't that much new, and they are hardly a classic

Chuck it on Ebay with a start price of £250 and wait for the bids to come

No, they're no classic. I think they were around £1800 new in '96. It had
400 miles on the clock when we bought it for £1400 in early '97.

  12. Silly money indeed - in local adverts they don't fetch anything like
that much. You can't take a proper bike test on one, so what's the
    point?

The only likely customers are people with a full licence and a decent
bike who want a cheap winter hack.

There's no need to pay more than ukp450 for a really nice RXS100, and
many come in for a lot less than that - a few years ago I bought a
    near-minter for 300 sovs.

Maybe 17 year olds buy bikes that size to ride around on L plates for year
or two (whilst they save up to buy a car). They're cheap to buy and to
run - though insurance for a 17 year old is probably £300 or so TPF&T.
Yeah, that's more the kind of price I was expecting. Thanks for the advice.
