  2. Isn't that along the same lines as why the female of the species has C&A
on a label in their knickers, so they put them on the right way round?

Did the Americans choose that combination as a way of recovering the raw
materials when the coins get recycled, or was it just a mistake?

Ooh that reminds me. There was a thing on TV t'other week where they
made a reef warning system for boats, consisting of a 20m long wire
suspended above the sea which triggered an alarm when a boat touched it.

To stop the wire corroding, they just hung an old magnesium pencil
sharpener on it, claiming the wire would never rust with that in place.
One little pencil sharpener for 20m of wire which would get constantly
splashed with salt water. Is that true?

If so, would bolting a bit of magnesium to a car body stop it from ever
going rusty? Surely all manufacturers would do that rather than bother
with things like galvanising & underseal if it were true.

Their wire was suspended a few feet above the water - so they were
    telling porkies then?
    Possibly.

As long as the block attached to it was immersed, it would still do
    the job.

Do you *honestly* expect me to believe you didn't look down the thread
    first? Hmmm?

It wasn't - they attached it directly to the wire.

Probably, but the wire was attached to posts that floated in the water,
keeping it at the same height above the surface.

    Dr Ivan D. Reid says...
They have one at Wookie Hole in Somerset. My kids thought it was great
because I have a female friend whose nickname is Wookie on account of
masses of shaggy red hair. It cost me a few quid to deface coins for my
kids to give to her as presents. When they'd handed them over she added
them to a collection of about 60 of exactly the same things gathered
from her friend's kids over the years.

Now he's older, my son calls her 'Wookie's Hole', for which he receives
a clip round the ear from her husband every time he says it. Doesn't
    stop him though.
