  4. Why are you still up at this time of night? Shouldn't you be out
    cleaning you new bike?

    I can multitask.

    And listen to the CD.

Marvellous. Only problem is that now I *have* to buy a Satnav system,
there's a small space just *crying* out for one on the instrument panel.

Nah, popes have cool, slightly weird names like Pius, Innocent, Boniface.

Who did Liberius piss off then? Everyone up to him got a sainthood. What
happened to him, caught with a big-breasted blonde was he?

Not really. It's just the cheapest place I've found for Garmin kit at
the moment is in Portugal. And I might be purchasing something myself in
    the next few weeks.

So if you did want some extra GPS bling for your portadisco then we
might be able to mutually benefit.

Ah. Right. I was toying with going the TomTom route. What have you
found? It has to talk. I want to have a sexy female voice purring "Turn
right now, you irresistible hunk" through the speakers. I'll pay extra
    for that.
It would, quite frankly, be rude not to.

Ah, I was thinking Garmin rather than Tom Tom. I may be wrong, but I
don't think the Tom Tom is waterproof and however it might appear when
you are riding your new toy you are actually outdoors

The Garmin 2610 does talk to you in a choice of languages. I borrowed
Gnome's [1] when I went to France and it was a superb bit of kit.

I suspect that you probably wouldn't hear the Tom Tom's built in speaker
when you are on the bike. Fine in a car, but probably not great on a
    bike.
Looking at prices, the Tom Tom Go is about £425 plus about £100 for the
maps of the rest of Europe and it comes with a little sucker to attach
it to the screen and it plugs into a cigarette lighter socket.

Having looked around, this mob appears to be about the cheapest I can
find for Garmin kit with European base maps:

    http://www.aspidshop.com/export/store/default.php

All Europed up, the Garmin would be about £200 more and you also need to
allow a further £60-70 for mounting hardware (RAM mounts
http://www.ram-mount-uk.com/ plus Garmin motorcycle wiring loom). With
the bike wiring loom it includes a socket to plug an earpiece into or
perhaps wire it into the bike stereo so when you are being yelled at in
German or purred at in French can be heard by everyone.

So not cheap, but IMO a better solution for bike use than the Tom Tom.
If it was simply for use in the car though, it would be a different
    matter.

Oh and from the 20 second chat I had with Salad Dogger on Saturday, you
may have to add an external aerial if the screen causes a problem. You
can with the Garmin, I don't think you can on the Tom Tom Go.

Tom Tom's pricing structure is one hell of a lot more sensible than
Garmin's, but I'd be concerned about using it on the bike.

and TomTom in the map pocket of my tank bag with some earbud speakers

Indeed. And can be had for £465 inc. tax but plus shipping rather than
    the £649 Maplin price.

The big advantage the newer generation units have is speed of
calculation for re-routing so if you do make a wrong turn it sorts you
    out a lot more effectively

And what happens when the manager, inevitably fall out of favour and
is booted out the club? Time for a name-change?
