Is Gore-Tex washable?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Whinging Courier, Dec 16, 2004.

  1. Or any other kind of breathable liner in a jacket?

I was thinking of a 30 degree gentle wash with one washing tablet.

    Yes, but...
Don't use ordinary detergents. Go to an outdoor shop and get the
proper stuff - Nikwax do one called "Tech Wash" which, while not
    cheap, is very good indeed.

Your jacket should have instructions, but if not do it on a 40deg
gentle cycle, making sure you don't use and fabric conditioner. Many
people reckon you should then tumble-dry, but I've always just let the
    drip-dry with no problems.

  3. As per Hein Gericke label - 30 degree wash, no tumble dry, no iron.
When I did mine, i re-sent it around the rinse cycle again to get rid of
    detergent/ soap marks.

    Still perfecterly waterproof.

  4. Buying Nikwax isn't an option. I have to do it now![1]
OK, I'll do it on a cool quick wash and go for a tumble dry on a
    v.gentle heat.

    [1] It isn't a bike jacket.

    Thanks to Carolyn as well.

As long as it's not a combi tablet like Bold with fabric conditioner in it

  6. It's Arial. <toddles off to check box>

    It doesn't mention fabric conditioner.
Nope. It's a jacket of Camo but has a waterproof, breathable lining.

Why not, surely it would add extra waterproofing, and provide that just
washed feeling for up to 7 days?

  8. We'll find out. I don't know what's in my tabs but put one in.

I bought some gore-tex socks a while ago and it said washing them and
tumble drying was ok but would last longer if you hand washed and drip
    dried.

It'll clog up the pores that allow the membrane to breathe.

    Just what Ace said.

You are meant to wash Gore-tex regularly as pre the instructions to keep
the breathability. The microscopic pores get blocked and it won't breath
    properly when dirty.

  14. I don't know[1]. I poofed out and took the van to the shops. Bad, I know
and having four wheels has taken its toll on my filtering skills.

[1] But it does have that just washed freshness.

Tumble drying is supposed to rejuvenate the witchcraft somehow.
You can also buy water repellant spray to re-coat it, as the stuff
that's on it in the first place wears off eventually.

    From Gore Tex:

Our recommendation is to wash in 40 degrees with a soft detergent (any
at the market), use no softener. If it is possible rinse it twice. Dry
the garments by tumble-drying or by ironing. Use low temperature when
tumble drying. The heat actually helps activate the surface treatment.
Do not bleach your garments. Generally do not dry clean, but if
professionally dry-cleaned, request clear distilled solvent rinse and
    spray repellent.

When the water resistance is poor, apply new repellent. Gore recommends
Granger's XT spray impregnation product. Granger's XT is a water-based
    fluoride chemical compound.
