Is a rough 'bird worth it?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Macie at Work, Mar 3, 2006.

  1. What's the consensus on buying a rough blackbird? A local dealer has
one in at 2K with 63,000 miles on it and although it looks ropey, it
seems a cheap (initial) way into ownership.

1997, Needs tyres, brake hoses, possibly chain and sprockets and
probably miscellaneous other bits and bobs. The plastics are untidy
rather than battered and the shiney stuff like hangers and fork legs
isn't anymore. But it does have a full service history.

So, is it wise to think about giving it a new home, or would it be
better to go and buy a tidy shiny one for £1500 quid more?

Walk away. Better yet, buy mine, which is in a much better state than that
    :)

Normally, I woudn't worry about buying a high-miler if it shows signs
that it's been really well cared-for and (importantly) all the
consumables have been replaced as and when necessary.

Simon has done the rough maths on the cost of putting it straight. You
may find that links like head races, suspension bishes etc are also
nadgered. Or maybe not. Either way, seeing as you can get a nice 'Bird
for £3000 (no need to pay as much as 3.5 unless you want to), I'd
    avoid.

At this point I bow to your valuation skillz of last October...

But at least I sold the panniers and Baglux cover separately :)

  5. I'd avoid it. Much better slaves can be bought more cheaply. A rough
black bird will get drunk on cheap rum and embarrass you in public. The
sex, while mind-blowingly sluttish, doesn't compensate, imo.
