I went to a grammar school, then to uni, and ended up in a
'professional' job. If I want a dose of clueless and feckless, I fire up
UKRM and hit send/receive. Works like a charm.

Isn't that the case throughout life though, only the skateboards and
    nintendos morph into other things?

I find this argument very persuasive, but would you carry this on
    through the entire education system?

    Medical school entrance for all?

Snot insanity, it is the sort of thing that what parents do. I was
certainly happy to leave the secondary education available to my
children in Pitsea[1] 7 miles to the ESE and move, with schools as a
major part of the choice, to Billericay[1].

I wouldn't argue for that cos I don't actually believe it.

What I would argue for though is that kids who are as far off the norm
on the high end of the scale as the cretins at the bottom need just as
much special needs treatment if we in society are to get the most out of
    them in the future.

It depends on the Secondary school and the way it is managed. My local
one, which draws from a catchment of largely owner occupier skilled
working classes turns out well the national average for A level results
and well below it for teenage pregnancies, despite having the Grammar
schools cream off the top 2%. Decent Head and supportive team though
    innit? And parents who gaf.

When I was about to move into a small Hertfordshire village, an
elderly and disgracefully snobbish aristocratic relative who was
already living there remarked: "You'll like it here, there are no
    natives"!

No problems with elitism in Higher Education then?
Thought you might be a Robin Pedley 'comprehensive university' advocate.

Sounds like my old upper school, we had one asian girl in the 4th year
and that was as culturally diverse as it got, with the exception of me
being a bit spiccy of course.

Not anymore. We've opened the floodgates so that (I think) around 50%
of our children now go on to higher education. This would be fine if
there was a need for this many graduates, I don't believe there is.

So because there are so many of them the state has had a creeping
'sort-of-privatisation' or more a mugging of the middle classes where
the children have to fund their education.

You then end up with people in their early 20s with degrees doing jobs
that would have been done by someone with A levels or O levels 20 years
ago. The only difference is these people have debts and three or four
years less years earning. It's madness.

It might be because my local secondary modern schools were operated
differently to inner city ones but kids attending them were given the
opportunity to take 'O' levels and then go to either college or a
different school to take 'A' levels and then move on to university. The
grammar school had CSE options for kids who obviously wouldn't reach
the required standard at 'O' level.

The one undeniable fact about the 11+ is that it allowed exceptionally
bright children the opportunity to have an education they cannot get
now unless their parents pay massive school fees. In my area the local
fee paying schools took kids on a scholarship judged by their 11+
results. Maybe this wasn't the case nationally but I don't really gaf.
