  3. Coo. My primary school, in 1966, had over forty different nationalities.
(It's now well over a hundred.) I played with friends including a Sikh, an
Afghan Muslim, Afro Caribbean, Irish, sort of vaguely German, Polish and all
sorts. This will sound like a cliché, but I only found out that the Afghan
    was Afghan a month ago.

I found it really weird when I lived in a small East Anglian village for a
couple of years. All white - and deeply insular and boring as hell, too.

The trouble now is that house prices are affected by catchment areas
which puts poorer families at a disadvantage when it comes to living
in an area with a good school.

At least the 11 plus exam left it to the kids to do the 'achieving'
    (1) rather than them having to come from a wealthier family to have an
    equal chance.

    (1) I know I slipped through the net but there were always a couple
    who sneaked through.

Disagree strongly, with both of you as it goes.

My local primary school has a reputation for excellence. Figures show
that pupils attending there achieve more when they move on to secondary
education than others in this area and I live in the poor (ex council)
part of Billericay. Mind you the headmistress isn't a fucking patch on
her elder sister, who was head of another very successful primary school
    in Pitsea.

And they don't just take from local, a small number of their kiddies
come from outside, for the reason stated above.

    "University of Life" type thang.
I have known parents move house in order to live within a certain school's
    catchment area. More insanity IMHO.
Mind you, now my daughter has left school, her commute to college takes
    around 2 hours each way.

    Eh?

What's wrong with trying to give your children the best possible start
in life? I'm a great believer in insulating my kids from the
    hoi-polloi.

OK, the last comment wasn't strictly serious. But... will they? I
suppose when they go to Uni they might. But if they fall into
'professional' jobs then they could probably avoid dealing with the
clueless and feckless outside of shops, restaurants etc.

Grammar schools were also based on catchment area. I'm not quite sure
    what your point is here.

Within said area everyone, regardless of race, wealth or background,
was able to attend grammar school, based solely on the passing of a
relatively simple pseudo-IQ test. What could possibly be wrong with
    that?

The replacement system, whereby the more intelligent children would
have to be educated at the same pace and level as the less
intelligent, surely could only serve to penalise those who previously
would have gone to grammar school?
Sure, but the argument here has been that segregation, allowing more
appropriate application of teaching etc. is a _good_ thing.
